Assessment of water shortage in urban areas
2007
Recent history has demonstrated that extreme hydrological events such as floods and droughts can create additional stress on water supplies essential for human and ecosystem health. As stated several times by European Environmental Agency, the prudent and efficient use of water is thus an important issue in Europe and a number of policies and mechanisms have been used or have been formulated to ensure sustainable use of water in the long term. Urban uses are responsible of almost the 17% of the total European fresh water consumption and they are rapidly growing depending on the extension of urban areas and concentration of population in cities. The present chapter will discuss the phases in…
Crisis económica y desarrollo metropolitano. Una propuesta de investigación
2015
[EN] The metropolitan areas have undergone deep transformations linked to neo-liberal globalization, whose effects have been disseminated with uneven intensity depending on their specific local paths. The current economic crisis and the austerity policies applied in the European periphery shows their contradictions and causes new social and spatial asymmetries that are best reflected in these large urban areas, modifying their development paths. This paper proposes an interpretation on the territorial dimension of the economic crisis, discusses some of its main metropolitan manifestations and proposes various lines of research. The effect of the financialisation in the production of urban s…
Eliciting Information on the Vulnerability Black Market from Interviews
2010
Threats to computing prompted by software vulnerabilities are abundant and costly for those affected. Adding to this problem is the emerging vulnerability black markets (VBMs), since they become places to trade malware and exploits. VBMs are discussed based on information derived from interviews with security researchers. The effort is enriched by further examination of documents surrounding the disclosure of four selected vulnerabilities cases. The result suggests that the VBMs is bifurcated into two distinct parts; the skilled-hacker and the script-kiddie VBMs with a possible link between them, where the latter become places to sell malware or exploit kits after the zero day vulnerability…
Has palaeontology answers for some current environmental problems?
2021
History as an irreversible process has no role from a uniformitarian point of view in geology and palaeobiology. Contingency is another trait of history and particle palaeontology has its foundation on such principles. However, new approaches in physics and the theory of systems point out the need to consider a time arrow. Moreover, chance and necessity are interwoven in synergetics and self-organization theory and there may be some possibility of prediction. The global biota has a history resulting from a process of self-organization. A rich fossil record was produced during the Phanerozoic times and this fossil record shows us how life overcame several important crisis. A clear understand…
Attentional processing biases to threat in schizophrenia: Evidence from a free-viewing task with emotional scenes
2021
Attentional biases to threatening stimuli have been suggested to play a key role in the onset and course of schizophrenia. However, current research has not completely demonstrated this assumption. The aim of this eye-tracking study was to shed light on the underlying psychological mechanisms of schizophrenia by examining the attentional processing of socio-emotional information. Forty-four individuals with schizophrenia and 47 healthy controls were assessed in a 3-s free-viewing task with a social scene (i.e., happy, threatening, or neutral) in competition with a non-social one to determine the effects of emotional information on the different stages of the attentional processing. The loca…
Forecasting Financial Crises and Contagion in Asia Using Dynamic Factor Analysis
2009
In this paper we use principal components analysis to obtain vulnerability indicators able to predict financial turmoil. Probit modelling through principal components and also stochastic simulation of a Dynamic Factor model are used to produce the corresponding probability forecasts regarding the currency crisis events affecting a number of East Asian countries during the 1997-1998 period. The principal components model improves upon a number of competing models, in terms of out-of-sample forecasting performance.
Cloud Computing Vulnerabilities Analysis
2019
Nowadays cloud computing technologies are the most widely used tools due to their great flexibility and also to their lower maintenance costs. Many vendors of cloud computing have appeared on the market for each type of cloud. These solutions still pose certain vulnerabilities and work to improve the security of cloud computing technologies. We analyze the main cloud computing solutions, analyze the vulnerabilities identified for these solutions, and also calculate the impact of these vulnerabilities based on the NVD scores. We average the scores for each solution for each cloud computing model. This way, we can see the impact of the vulnerabilities identified so far for each cloud computin…

Masonry structures: A proposal of analytical generation of fragility functions for tsunami impact – Application to the Mediterranean coasts
2021
Abstract Evaluation of tsunami vulnerability of coastal buildings is gaining high interest in recent years in the areas with high tsunami hazard. Fragility evaluation is a fundamental step to obtain a quantitative estimation of the probability of building damage and in order to define possible strategies for risk mitigation. Several empirical fragility curves are available for masonry structures. However, an empirical fragility curve is generally based on field surveys after tsunami events, not always available. Conversely, analytical fragility curves are based on prediction approaches. In this paper, a proposal for the evaluation of analytical fragility curves for masonry structures typica…
