Seabird influence on ecological processes in coastal marine ecosystems: An overlooked role? A critical review

2021

Abstract Seabirds are vital, but overlooked, components of coastal marine ecosystems and may connect the marine and terrestrial environment at a global scale, significantly contributing to inter-habitat connectivity and the provision of multiple ecosystem services. Although the ecological and functional role of birds in terrestrial areas, islands in particular, has been deeply studied since the last century, the same does not hold true for coastal marine areas. Given the importance of coastal areas for seabirds worldwide and, at the same time, the high vulnerability of both, looking into the role of seabirds in influencing the ecosystem functioning in coastal areas is needed nowadays. Here,…

Managing information security risks during new technology adoption

2012

Author's version of an article in the journal: Computers and Security. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cose.2012.09.001 In the present study, we draw on previous system dynamics research on operational transition and change of vulnerability to investigate the role of incident response capability in controlling the severity of incidents during the adoption of new technology. Toward this end, we build a system dynamics model using the Norwegian Oil and Gas Industry as the context. The Norwegian Oil and Gas Industry has started to adopt new information communication technology to connect its offshore platforms, onshore control centers, and suppliers. In oil co…

Vulnerability maps pollution to hydrocarbon and urban waste pollution in seawater intrusion areas

2004

Deception and Abuse: Manifold Instances of Proximity Violence Against Sub-Saharan Women

2020

This chapter, by referring to the gender-violence binomial, highlights some of the dynamics between “resistant victims” and “proximate perpetrators” which characterize proximity violence. It presents the results of research consisting in participant observation of 18 sub-Saharan women residing in refugee facilities located in western Sicily and 16 non-directive interviews, from which three cases have been extracted.

The Transition from Hospital to Home: Older People's Experiences

2015

The amount of older patients who are discharged from hospitals while continuing to need care is increasing in Norway. The transition between different care services has the potential for high rates of medication errors, incomplete or inaccurate information transfer, and lack of appropriate follow-up care. Thus, insight into the transition process is vital to understanding the complexity and vulnerability the patients are exposed to in this process. The aim of this phenomenological hermeneutic study was to describe and illuminate the lived experiences of older home residents during the transitions from hospital to home. Data were collected through narrative interviews, and an interpretation …

Finalmente…

Frailty and multimorbidity: Two related yet different concepts.

2016

The extension of life expectancy is a global phenomenon. The growth in the ageing population has created a new health scenario in which there is a higher prevalence of frailty and multimorbidity. The attention received by both conditions derives from their strong association with disability, hospitalization, and death. The aim of the present paper is to conceptualize and differentiate these terms and to discuss their interrelations. We conclude that, yet related, they represent two different clinical conditions. Frailty identifies the increased vulnerability to stressors due to a dynamic, non-linear, and multidimensional depletion of physiological reserve and redundancy, whereas multimorbid…

To participate or not? Giving voice to gender and socio-economic differences in colorectal cancer screening programmes

2011

This paper examines the influence of gender and socio-economic status (SES) on participation in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Qualitative study with eight focus groups comprised of participants and non-participants in a CRC screening programme in Valencia (Spain), structural sample design and discursive analysis by gender, SES and participation. Non-participants and those with lower SES tended to have less knowledge about both the disease and the programme. Reasons for participation varied according to gender: women were motivated because they value the importance of self-care and early detection in order to prevent personal and family suffering while men were encouraged by their partn…
