Electrically Driven Magnetic Domain Wall Rotation in Multiferroic Heterostructures to Manipulate Suspended On-Chip Magnetic Particles

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate deterministic electrically driven, strain-mediated domain wall (DW) rotation in ferromagnetic Ni rings fabricated on piezoelectric [Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3]0.66-[PbTiO3]0.34 (PMN-PT) substrates. While simultaneously imaging the Ni rings with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy, an electric field is applied across the PMN-PT substrate that induces strain in the ring structures, driving DW rotation around the ring toward the dominant PMN-PT strain axis by the inverse magnetostriction effect. AbstractSaccular intracranial aneurysm (sIA) rupture leads to subarachnoid haemorrhage and is preceded by chronic inflammation and atherosclerotic changes of the sIA wall. Increased lymphangiogenesis has been detected in atherosclerotic extracranial arteries and in abdominal aortic aneurysms, but the presence of lymphatic vessels in sIAs has remained unexplored. The behavior of the 180° domain walls in disordered dielectrics like KTaO3 : Li and KTaO3 : Nb

We calculate the structure of 180° domain wall in disordered ferroelectrics with random site electric dipoles (i.e. those like K 1-x Li x TaO 3 , KTa 1-x Nb x O 3 , where Li + or Nb 5+ are off-center ions forming impurity dipoles). The calculation is performed on the base of the free energy functional of disordered dielectrics derived earlier [M. D. Glinchuk et al., Phase Transit., 2003 (to be published)] within the framework of a random field method. We obtain the domain wall thickness as a function of impurity dipole concentration n and temperature T. Generation of optical domain-wall structures from modulational instability in a bimodal fiber.

We study experimentally modulational instability in a normally dispersive bimodal fiber under modal group-velocity-matching conditions. In the strong pump depletion regime, higher order sideband harmonics detected in the output spectra as well as autocorrelation measurements reveal the formation of subpicosecond domain-wall structures. Across these temporal structures the electromagnetic field distribution switches abruptly between the two transverse modes of the fiber. These structures are reminiscent of the so-called domain-wall soliton. Our results constitute therefore an experimental indication of the existence of this fundamental soliton.

Lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia. A new technique for treatment with botulinum toxin guided by electromyography and arthroscopy

Lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia is characterized by mandibular displacement towards the opposite side of the affected muscle. It may be associated with functional disorders affecting speech, swallowing, chewing and facial symmetry. Injection with botulinum toxin is recognized as the most effective treatment. Locating the lower head of the lateral pterygoid muscle for the injection is not difficult using electromyographic guidance; however, location of the upper head is more complicated, even with electromyography. We report a case of lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia in which precise injection of the upper head was achieved with the aid of arthroscopy.

Isolation and characterization of anavirulent Candida albicansyeast monomorphic mutant

Mutagenesis of Candida albicans strain ATCC 26555 with N-methyl-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine followed by plating on solid yeast nitrogen base-N-acetylglucosamine medium at 37 degrees C yielded colony morphology variants that were characterized as forming smooth colonies, in contrast to the rough colonies formed by the parental strain. One yeast monomorphic mutant, CAL4, was studied in detail. Strain CAL4 is defective in filamentous growth, unable to form hyphae or pseudohyphae in vivo and in vitro. Computation of flow velocity in rough channels

Accurate estimate of flow-velocity profile is of crucial importance both for scientific purposes and for solving numerous engineering problems that include, among others, sediment transport, contaminant transport, flow resistance evaluation. This paper presents a new empirical equation to represent the vertical velocity profile. The proposed equation is essentially a modified form of the well-known logarithm law of the wall and contains three parameters having a clear physical meaning. Risks of mould growth in different building structures

In the current paper the impact of real Latvian climate conditions on a variety of building constructions is inspected. The influence of the humidity on buildings’ sustainability in three different building units has been appraised. Condensate risks in a multi-layer wall are analyzed by transient outdoor climatic conditions. Risks of mould growth are discussed in detail taking into account the properties of building materials, dependence of humidity on temperature and season. The effect of vapour barrier is analyzed from several aspects. Theoretical analysis has been done based on real test stands built in Riga. Some experimental results are obtained.
