Thermal Parameters Measurements of High-Rise Building Envelope

2016

In buildings, to ensure the thermal comfort of the occupants and to keep the energy consumption as low as possible, a correct design of the thermal system is necessary. To do so, an appropriate determination of the thermo-physical properties of the wall materials is needed, particularly; new light-weight building technologies are widely used in the construction of the building envelope. One of these parameters, particularly important in Mediterranean climatic dynamic conditions is the heat capacity, due to the presence of the sun’s energy contribution in hot and cold seasons. The value of the heat capacity in such like materials is typically quite different from the declared parameter, obta…

Environmental assessment of a new building envelope material derived from urban agriculture wastes : the case of the tomato plants stems

2023

Abstract Purpose Decarbonizing cities is one of today’s biggest challenges. In this regard, particular attention has been paid on improving the environmental performance of buildings. In this framework, this work consists in assessing the environmental impact of an innovative building envelope component derived from urban agriculture (UA) wastes. In fact, rooftop UA seems to be a possible solution to the rising food demand due to increasing urban demographic growth. Consequently, rooftop UA wastes need to be treated in sustainable ways. Methods This study aims to determine the carbon footprint and embodied energy of a new infill wall material, derived from UA wastes produced by a building r…

STUDIO NUMERICO DELL'EMODINAMICA IN PAZIENTI CON DISSECAZIONE AORTICA DI TIPO B

2013

The development of type B aortic dissection (AoD) is caused by altered haemodynamic forces exerted on false and true lumina of dissected aorta. This work aims to study haemodynamic and morphological proprieties, which influence the progression or stability of type B AoD. Computational fluid-dynamic analyses were performed on three patients with type B AoD, whose two presented an aneurysm evolution and one presented no further complication connected with dissection. Blood flow features showed that the true lumen flow was laminar and uniform while false lumen flow lost the laminar characteristic with consequent vorticity formation. The entry point zone proximal to the aortic arch showed both …

Mortars and Plasters under the Mosaics and the Wall Paintings of the Roman Villa at Piazza Armerina, Sicily

2010

The Roman Villa at Piazza Armerina in Sicily, built in many successive steps over the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D., is renowned all over the world for both the wealth and the refinement of its mosaic floors. In February 2007 the Regional Government of Sicily started a restoration project of the whole archaeological site. The systematic survey and study of all decorative elements highlighted the value of wall paintings, which until then were almost unknown except for casual approaches to specific problems of conservation, carried on without any relation to the far and away famous mosaics. This paper shows the results of a physical chemical investigation of the mortars used for both floors and …

Poly-left-lactic acid tubular scaffolds via diffusion induced phase separation: Control of morphology

2013

n this work, tubular poly-left-lactic acid scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering applications were produced by an innovative two-step method. The scaffolds were obtained by performing a dip-coating around a nylon fiber, followed by a diffusion induced phase separation process. Morphological analysis revealed that the internal lumen of the as-obtained scaffold is equal to the diameter of the fiber utilized; the internal surface is homogeneous with micropores 1–2 μm large. Moreover, a porous open structure was detected across the thickness of the walls of the scaffold. An accurate analysis of the preparation process revealed that it is possible to tune up the morphology of the scaffold (w…

Pittura antica e restauro virtuale

2020

This contribution presents the preliminary work, carried out over the past few months, concerning the reconstructive study of the paintings and mosaics of the Centennial House ", Insula IX-8, in Pompeii. In particular, the work focused on the decorated surfaces of 11 rooms located along the western part of the house, between the large central peristyle and the centenary alley. The different state of conservation of the paintings and mosaics made it necessary to use two different methods of digital intervention: the "virtual restoration" and the "virtual reconstruction". Both aim to reconstruct the initial condition of the appearance of the paintings at the time of their creation and use the…

Halaesa Arconidea (Tusa, Messina). Primi risultati dagli scavi delle fortificazioni, settore nord-est.

2023

This report describes the activities and results of two years of archaeological excavations carried out by the University of Palermo at the site of Halaesa, in northern Sicily. The excavations revealed the structure of the ancient city walls (maybe built in two different phases, during the Late Hellenistic/Early Roman peri-od) and the presence of a tank close to the wall, connected to the defense sistem.

Giotto’s legacy and western Sicily. The restoration of a late 14th century Maiestas Domini in the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi in Palermo, Italy

2022

Between November 2019 and July 2020, the restoration of a mural painting depicting the "Maiestas Domini," loca…

Reinventare il muro. Scena, cornice, schermo nello spazio pubblico a partire da Agnès Varda

2019

This paper deals with the “theoretical history” of the concept of wall – considered both as a place and as a scene – as proposed by Agnès Varda in Mur, murs (Id., 1981) and Visages, Villages (Faces, Places, 2017). In these films, walls are both surfaces of inscription of the stories binding the subjects to a certain place and frames in which everyone’s conducts become a spectacle addressed to anyone. This theoretical framework directly traceable in these works will be finally considered as a potential interpreting strategy of some practices in urban art (such as those of Blu and Bansky) that magnify aesthetical and political possibilities of the walls modelling the space of historical exist…
