Extension of Walsh's rules to more general systems

1972

It is demonstrated that location of hydrogen atoms within bonding distance of a simple triatomic molecule can alter the order of energy levels relative to that of the parent system without significantly changing the behavior of the orbital energies under geometrical variation. As a result the ground state electronic configurations of H n AB2 systems often differ from those of triatomics with the same number of electrons and this fact is shown to be directly responsible for the existence of such distinctive geometrical structures as those possessed by cyclopropane, cyclopropyl and allyl cations and cyclopropene. Thus the familiar prescription of Walsh's rules which states that isoelectronic …

Testimonial writing in Rodolfo Walsh and Francisco Urondo: political-aesthetical experiences in revolutionary times

2016

Nationwide evaluation of day-to-day clinical pharmacists' interventions in German hospitals.

2015

tudy Objective To describe and evaluate the extent and diversity of nationwide data from clinical pharmacists’ interventions (PIs) in German hospitals. Design Retrospective analysis. Data Source The ADKA-DokuPIK German database, a national anonymous self-reported Internet-based documentation system for routine PIs as well as for medication errors reported by German hospital pharmacists. Measurements and Main Results Data sets from ADKA-DokuPIK entered between January 2009 and December 2012 were analyzed descriptively. A total of 27,610 PIs were entered, mainly by ward-based clinical pharmacists (82.5%). Most of the PIs were performed on surgical wards (37.8%), followed by anesthesiology/int…

Sampling properties of the Bayesian posterior mean with an application to WALS estimation

2022

Many statistical and econometric learning methods rely on Bayesian ideas, often applied or reinterpreted in a frequentist setting. Two leading examples are shrinkage estimators and model averaging estimators, such as weighted-average least squares (WALS). In many instances, the accuracy of these learning methods in repeated samples is assessed using the variance of the posterior distribution of the parameters of interest given the data. This may be permissible when the sample size is large because, under the conditions of the Bernstein--von Mises theorem, the posterior variance agrees asymptotically with the frequentist variance. In finite samples, however, things are less clear. In this pa…

Stability of Borane−Adduct Complexes:  A G-2 Molecular Orbital Study

1997

Complexation energies of H3BXHn and [H3BXHn-1]- complexes (X = N, O, F, P, S, and Cl) (n = 3, 2, 1) have been computed at the G-2 level of theory. The formation of H3BXH3 (X = N, P) is found to be more favored than the formations of H3BXH2 (X = O, S) and H3BXH (X = F, Cl). The qualitative features of the molecular orbital interaction (the correlation diagrams) of H3BNH3 (C3v symmetry group), H3BOH2 (Cs symmetry group), and H3BFH (Cs symmetry group) complexes are presented. These diagrams show that the σ character of the B−X bond decreases and the π character increases when the electronegativity of X increases and indicate that the B−X bond cannot be treated only in terms of the simplest mod…

Lipase maturation factor 1 is required for endothelial lipase activity

2011

Lipase maturation factor 1 (Lmf1) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane protein involved in the posttranslational folding and/or assembly of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL) into active enzymes. Mutations in Lmf1 are associated with diminished LPL and HL activities ("combined lipase deficiency") and result in severe hypertriglyceridemia in mice as well as in human subjects. Here, we investigate whether endothelial lipase (EL) also requires Lmf1 to attain enzymatic activity. We demonstrate that cells harboring a (cld) loss-of-function mutation in the Lmf1 gene are unable to generate active EL, but they regain this capacity after reconstitution with the Lmf1 wild type. Fur…

Weighted-average least squares estimation of generalized linear models

2018

The weighted-average least squares (WALS) approach, introduced by Magnus et al. (2010) in the context of Gaussian linear models, has been shown to enjoy important advantages over other strictly Bayesian and strictly frequentist model averaging estimators when accounting for problems of uncertainty in the choice of the regressors. In this paper we extend the WALS approach to deal with uncertainty about the specification of the linear predictor in the wider class of generalized linear models (GLMs). We study the large-sample properties of the WALS estimator for GLMs under a local misspecification framework that allows the development of asymptotic model averaging theory. We also investigate t…

Multiple-plane image formation by Walsh zone plates.

2018

[EN] A radial Walsh filter is a phase binary diffractive optical element characterized by a set of concentric rings that take the phase values 0 or ¿, corresponding to the values + 1 or ¿1 of a given radial Walsh function. Therefore, a Walsh filter can be re-interpreted as an aperiodic multifocal zone plate, capable to produce images of multiple planes simultaneously in a single output plane of an image forming system. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate for the first time the focusing capabilities of these structures. Additionally, we report the first achievement of images of multiple-plane objects in a single image plane with these aperiodic diffractive lenses.
