Performances and Emissions Improvement of an S.I. Engine Fuelled by LPG/Gasoline Mixtures
2010
As is known gaseous fuels, such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Natural Gas (NG), thanks to their good mixing capabilities, allow complete and cleaner combustion than normal gasoline, resulting in lower pollutant emissions and particulate matter. Some of the automobile producers already put on the market “bi-fuel” engines, which may be fed either with standard gasoline or with LPG. These engines, endowed of two separate injection systems, are originally designed for gasoline operation; hence they do not fully exploit the good qualities of LPG, such as its better knocking resistance, which would allow higher compression ratios. Moreover, when running with gasoline at medium high loads, …
Evenness, biodiversity, and ecosystem function of intertidal communities along the Italian coasts: Experimental short-term response to ambient and ex…
2023
Biodiversity can promote ecosystem functioning in both terrestrial and marine environments, emphasizing the neces- sity ofbiodiversity conservation in order to preserve critical ecosystem functions and associated services. However, the role of biodiversity in buffering ecosystem functioning under extreme events caused by climate change remains a major scientific issue, especially for intertidal systems experiencing stressors from both terrestrial and marine drivers. We performed a regional-scale field experiment along the Italian coast to investigate the response of unmanipulated intertidal communities (by using a natural biodiversity gradient) to low tide aerial exposure to both ambient an…
Estimation of alcohol consumption during >Fallas> festivity in the wastewater of Valencia city (Spain) using ethyl sulfate as a biomarker
2016
Alcohol consumption has been increasing in the last years and it has become a sociological problem due its derived health and safety problems. Ethyl sulfate is a secondary metabolite of the alcohol degradation that is excreted through the urine (0.010-0.016%) after alcohol ingestion and it is quite stable in water. In this study, a new methodology to determine ethyl sulfate by ion-pair liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed. Different ion-pairs and additives were tested directly in the sample extracts or in the mobile phase. The best ion-pair was set up adding 0.5M of tributylamine and 0.1% of formic acid to the sample. The limit of quantification was 0.3μgL…
Evaluation of carbamazepine uptake and metabolization by Typha spp., a plant with potential use in phytotreatment
2011
Abstract Phytoremediation technologies such as constructed wetlands have shown higher efficiencies in removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewaters than conventional wastewater treatment processes, and plants seem to have an important role in the removal of some of those compounds. In this context, a study was conducted to assess tolerance, uptake, and metabolism of the epilepsy drug, carbamazepine, by the macrophyte Typha spp. This evaluation was conducted in hydroponic solutions with 0.5–2.0 mg/L of this pharmaceutical for a maximum period of 21 days. The removal of carbamazepine from nutrient solutions by the plants reached values of 82% of the initial contents. Furthermore, a metabolite (…

Process understanding of a wastewater batch reactor with block-wise PLS
2007
In this work a systematic methodology ‘block-wise PLS’ has been applied to thoroughly analyse data from a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operated for biological phosphorus removal from wastewater. The aim of this study was to diagnose process variables (collected by the inexpensive and low-maintenance sensors installed in the SBR) likely related to the main key indicator of process performance: the phosphorus removal efficiency (PRE), determined off-line in the quality control laboratory. In this way, it is intended to aid the process operators in the detection of abnormal values of these critical variables which would indicate undesirable process performance, so that, they could act on the…
From a fixed bed Ag–alumina catalyst to a modified reactor design: how to enhance the crucial heterogeneous–homogeneous reactions in HC-SCR
2004
Abstract A highly active Ag/alumina catalyst for continuous reduction of NO to nitrogen with n-octane under lean conditions was prepared. It was observed in the reactor set-up experiments for optimization of the converter, that surface generated gas phase species are crucial for obtaining high conversion. EPR and matrix isolated FTIR studies at low temperature (10–18 K) were performed for identification of the radicals. Experimental data, observed at steady state conditions in the temperature range 300–550 °C, was used to produce an artificial neural network model of the catalytic converter with four catalyst beds.
Territorial development models: A new strategic vision to analyze the relationship between the environment, public goods and geographical indications
2021
Abstract Geographical indications (GIs) are increasingly seen as a tool to support sustainable local development. This study focuses on how geographical indications can contribute to a territorial public system, and how this can be threatened by several market failures. Starting from the economic literature on public goods, this document highlights how geographical indications, and their legal protection, can guarantee a sustainable development model. This article aims to illustrate and develop new economic arguments that support a more comprehensive political approach to the contribution that Geographical indications make to sustainable development. The research is focused in Sicily on the…
