In the hydrologic literature, to model water flow in unsaturated soils, the Richards equation is usually applied, allowing the main components of the hydrologic cycle, as rainfall partitioning into surface runoff and infiltration, to be determined. There are three vineyards that represent for morphological characteristics and management the entire sub-basin which is one of the areas most under vines in Sicily. The aim is to assess the sustainability of irrigation management in terms of saving energy through the application of the model FAO 56 fetlock water balance. This study lays the foundation for the preparation of action plans developed to reverse negative trends in environmental resource management which are susceptible to degradation processes.

Plant diversity effects on the water balance of an experimental grassland

In the literature, contrasting effects of plant species richness on the soil water balance are reported. Our objective was to assess the effects of plant species and functional richness and functional identity on soil water contents and water fluxes in the experimental grassland of the Jena Experiment. The Jena Experiment comprises 86 plots on which plant species richness (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 60) and functional group composition (zero to four functional groups: legumes, grasses, tall herbs, and small herbs) were manipulated in a factorial design. Moroccan Climate in the Present and Future: Combined View from Observational Data and Regional Climate Scenarios

The impact of climate change on water availability in the Middle East and the Upper Jordan catchment (UJC) is investigated by dynamic downscaling of ECHAM4 time slices and subsequent hydrological modelling. Two time slices (1961–90 and 2070–99) of the global climate scenario B2 of ECHAM4 were dynamically downscaled with the meteorological model MM5 in two nesting steps of 54 km and 18 km resolution. The meteorological fields were used to drive a physically based hydrological model, computing in detail the surface and subsurface water flow and water balance of the UJC.

Energy, water and environmental balance of a complex water supply system

The present paper describes the analysis of water and energy balance in a complex urban water supply system. The analysis was carried out employing Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodologies. The LCA approach was integrated with the analysis of the system energy and water balance. This implies that the effects of climate change are plainly identified on territories. Mechanistic soil-crop models have become indispensable tools to investigate the effect of management practices on the productivity or environmental impacts of arable crops. Ideally these models may claim to be universally applicable because they simulate the major processes governing the fate of inputs such as fertiliser nitrogen or pesticides.
