The main properties required to the modem cutting tools to be employed in production, are both high wear resistance and chemical stability. In this last years, in the machining of MMCs several kinds of coated tools have been developed; they are characterized by high hardness to resist to the relevant strength and abrasive action of the reinforce fibers or particles, arranged inside the matrix. In turning of MMC the employ of Tungsten Carbide tools coated with Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) have shown to be very effective, whereas they are very expensive thus increasing the production costs.

Friction and wear testing of multilayer coatings on carbide substrates for dry machining applications

Abstract The principle aim of this paper is to investigate three wear-protective coatings with multilayer structures, which are frequently used in the cutting tool industry and to assess their frictional behaviour under the test conditions equivalent to those for the cutting of medium carbon steel. Abstract The paper presents the results of conformal pin-on-disc tribological tests concerning the hard oxidised zone, α-Ti(O), created at the surface of a titanium specimens sliding against the sintered and hardened up to 850 HV30, Grade T1 high speed steel (HS18-0-1) counterspecimens. Comparison with the results obtained for the tests performed against hardened up to 620 HV30 C45 carbon steel counterspecimens has been done. Prediction of Tool Wear Progress in Machining of Carbon Steel using different Tool Wear Mechanismsl

In this paper the prediction of tool wear on carbide uncoated tools was taken into account. In particular, two different tool wear models based on the diffusion mechanism and on the abrasion mechanism were considered. The calibration of the utilized models was done using the results obtained by experimental analysis performed on an orthogonally machined AISI 1020 tube. Once the calibration was executed, numerical simulations, for both the utilized tool wear models, were simultaneously performed with the aim to test the capability of the proposed numerical procedure. The comparison between the two tool wear mechanisms for predicting the flank tool wear is discussed in the paper.

Friction and wear properties of titanium and oxidised titanium in dry sliding against hardened C45 steel

Abstract The aim of the paper is to present the results of conformal pin-on-disc tribological tests concerning the hard oxidised zone created in superficial layer of a titanium specimen sliding against the hardened to a hardness of 690 HV carbon C45 steel counterspecimen. Tribological testing was carried out at room temperature and at unlubricated conditions. Recrystallization in subsurface zone seen by positron annihilation

Abstract The paper presents studies of the defect distribution, detected by the positron annihilation method in the subsurface zone (SZ) of copper samples after dry sliding wear. It takes advantage of a new experimental technique based on scanning of the positron implantation profile. It allowed us to detect the defect profile in copper to the depth of 200 μm in a nondestructive way and study isochronal annealing behavior of this profile. We determined that annealing induces a recrystallization process which runs faster close to the surface than in deeper regions. Chapter 13 provides comprehensive knowledge regarding machinability of construction materials and characterizes various meanings of this specific material feature, allowing effective selection of machining conditions.
