Berry Size and Qualitative Characteristics of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Syrah

The effect of variation in berry size on berry composition was studied in irrigated Syrah/R99 grapevines, located in a temperate area of South Africa. Berries from 45 clusters, sampled from both sides of the canopy (east and west), were weighed to create four categories: 1. less or equal to 1.5 g; 2. between 1.51 g and 2.00 g; 3. between 2.01 g and 2.50 g; 4. more than 2.50 g. Berry physical characteristics were determined and total anthocyanins and seed flavonoids were analysed by spectrophotometry and anthocyanin profiles by HPLC. Fruit position on the bunch (inflorescence) is an important part of variability in banana fruit weight at harvest, as fruits at the bottom of the bunch (distal fruits) are approx. 40% smaller than those at the top (proximal fruits). In this study, the respective roles of cell number and cell filling rate in the development of pulp dry weight are estimated. Abstract An increase in temperature of approximately 4 °C is expected to occur in the Mediterranean by the end of the century. Concomitant to this warming, a foreseeable rise in salinity will affect aquatic species. Sampling, cost-effective analysis, diagnosis of sources of pollution and assessment of potential toxicological effects were included in the case study. Marine sediments collected from 24 points along the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain (Comunitat Valenciana region) in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015 have been analysed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene were the most found. An analysis of the relative abundance of selected PAHs revealed that petrogenic and mixed petrogenic/pyrogenic sources are predominant in the area. Stimulation of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in a Baltic Sea plankton community by land-derived organic matter or iron addition

In the Baltic Sea, floating blooms of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria occur yearly during late summer. These blooms can sometimes be limited by iron. Due to extensive foresting around the Baltic Sea, iron is entering the Baltic Sea partly bound to dissolved organic material (DOM) via rivers. An experiment was performed in 300 l laboratory mesocosms to test the hypothesis that riverine high- molecular weight dissolved organic matter (HMWDOM), extracted by tangential flow filtration >1000 Da, stimulates the biomass of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, by increasing the availability of iron. Phytoplankton synthesizes essential ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for consumers in the aquatic food webs. Only certain phytoplankton taxa can synthesize eicosapentaenoic (EPA; 20:5ω3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6ω3), whereas all phytoplankton taxa can synthesize shorter-chain ω-3 and ω-6 PUFA. Green methodology for quality control of elemental content of infant milk powder

Abstract A green methodology for the direct determination of elemental content in infant milk powder samples from 0 to 3 years was developed. A portable energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) tool has been used as a direct method for the quantification of five essential elements (Ca, K, Fe, Cu and Zn). For analysis pellets from 0.8 g of each sample weight were made and analyzed. Due to the high dependence of the ED-XRF signal with the sample matrix, external calibrations using cocoa powder diluted with glucose were performed. 1. In seasonal environments, optimal onset of breeding and survival plays major roles in individual fitness. Many physiological and behavioural factors related to breeding increase the risk of predation; thus, breeding decisions should be based on current risks and benefits.
