Assessment of various factors influencing esophageal pressure measurement. II. Significance of physiological factors in intraluminal manometry.

1980

In the second part of this study the effect of age, sex, body size, body weight and timing of the manometric examination (morning vs. noon) on esophageal pressure measurement was investigated in a total of 119 healthy subjects, using an electromagnetic microtransducer. Additionally intraindividual variation of pressures was studied over a period of 6 months. Of these parameters only age influenced upper esophageal sphincter (UES) pressure significantly: The mean UES pressure of younger subjects (20-49 years) was significantly higher (144.4 +/- 8.6 mmHg) compared to that of older subjects (50-80 years) where a mean pressure of 103.4 +/- 7.2 mmHg was recorded (p less than 0.0005). Intraindivi…

Endogenous 3-methylhistidine excretion in healthy women and men with reference to muscle protein metabolism.

1984

Presently 3-methylhistidine excretion is widely used for monitoring the metabolic status of patients during different kinds of clinical conditions. Aim of the study was to reconsider its predicative value on the basis of a larger collective of healthy persons and to find a standardization independent from sex. Therefore endogenous 3-methylhistidine release of 40 healthy adults (24 women and 16 men) was measured and related to body weight, body surface area, arm muscle circumference, and nitrogen and creatinine excretion. A positive correlation could be observed only for 3-methylhistidine and creatinine excretion and that to the same extent both for females and males. Assuming that the excre…

Multiple sclerosis: prevalence of the ‘central vein’ sign in white matter lesions on gadolinium-enhanced susceptibility-weighted images

2021

Aims To evaluate prospectively whether an intravenous gadolinium injection could improve the detection of the central vein sign on susceptibility-weighted imaging sequences obtained with a 1.5 T magnetic resonance scanner in patients with multiple sclerosis compared to unenhanced susceptibility-weighted images. Materials and methods This prospective, institution review board-approved study included 19 patients affected by multiple sclerosis (six men; 13 women; mean age 40.8 years, range 20–74 years). Patients had the relapsing–remitting clinical subtype in 95% of cases, and only one (5%) patient had the primary progressive clinical subtype of multiple sclerosis. T2-weighted images, fluid-at…

Comparison of partial coherence interferometry and ultrasound for anterior segment biometry.

2008

To assess the performance of a partial coherence interferometry (PCI)-based device for the determination of anterior segment biometry.Clinica Centrofama, Cartagena, Murcia, Spain.Central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and lens thickness (LT) were measured with the ACMaster PCI anterior segment biometer and an Echoscan US-1800 ultrasound (US) biometer/pachymeter with and without cycloplegia. To determine the precision of the instruments, the same examiner took 30 consecutive CCT, ACD, and LT measurements in a single subject under the same conditions and with and without cycloplegia. The same measurements were performed in additional subjects.Twenty-one eyes (16 subjec…

Advanced magnetic resonance imaging of cortical laminar necrosis in patients with stroke

2019

Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the novel advanced magnetic resonance imaging findings of acute stage cortical laminar necrosis developing after complicated cardiovascular or abdominal surgery. Materials and methods This institutional review board-approved study included patients with postoperative stroke due to cortical laminar necrosis imaged with magnetic resonance in the acute stage. Brain magnetic resonance imaging examinations were obtained on a 3T magnetic resonance scanner within 48 hours of the neurological symptoms, including diffusion-weighted images (b value, 1000 s/mm2) and arterial spin labelling using a pseudo-continuous arterial spin labelling method in four pati…

Flexibility in weight management.

2013

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships between changes in flexible vs. rigid restraints of eating during weight management, as well as how changes in the cognitive restraint of eating were related to psychological well-being and flexibility. The data includes information on 49 overweight persons who participated in a weight loss and maintenance (WLM) intervention and a follow-up assessment after 8-9 months. An increase in flexible cognitive restraint during the weight loss intervention was related to better weight loss maintenance and well-being. The more flexible restraint increased during the WLM intervention, the more psychological distress decreased. Moreover, lar…

The Applicability of a Checklist for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency: Results of the Italian Exocrine Pancreatic Ins…

2020

Objective To evaluate a rapid checklist capable of identifying exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in outpatients. Methods Prospective observational study of a multicenter cohort. Results One hundred and two patients were enrolled; 61.8% of the patients had medically-treated benign or malignant pancreatic disease, and 38.2% had a pancreatic resection. Visual examination of the feces was evaluated in 84 patients and it was related to steatorrhea in 51 patients (50.0%). Receiver operating characteristic curves were evaluated for each symptom or clinical sign and four of them (ie, increase in daily bowel movements, number of bowel movements, fatty stools, >10% weight loss) had a satisfactory …

BODY MASS INDEX DOES NOT CHANGE BEFORE PARKINSON'S DISEASE ONSET.

2008

Background and purpose:  Previous studies on the association between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and body mass index (BMI) have reported conflicting results. We investigated the relationship between PD and BMI by a case–control study. Methods:  PD patients were randomly matched to healthy individuals by sex and age. BMI distribution in cases has been compared with BMI of controls and odd ratios (ORs) with 95% CI were calculated. Results:  We included 318 PD patients and 318 controls. We observed no association between PD and BMI. BMI distribution in cases and controls was similar also when we adjusted for diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and the time elapsed between PD onset and the interview (O…

Increased prevalence of obesity in narcoleptic patients and relatives

2001

Increased Body Mass Indices (BMIs), increased prevalences of non insulin-dependent diabetes and sleep apnoe syndrome have been reported to be associated with narcolepsy. Our objective was to explore and possibly confirm the association of narcolepsy and increased BMI. In addition, we addressed the question whether increased BMIs also occur in relatives of narcoleptic patients. Together with narcolepsy-related clinical parameters we measured body weight and height of 132 narcoleptic patients who agreed to participate in our narcolepsy research program. In addition, 52 first degree relatives of 22 index patients, mostly from multiplex families, were included in the study. Data were compared t…

Odontostomatological therapeutic possibilities in patients with sleep apnea

2009

Objectives: To evaluate the different therapeutic possibilities for treating Sleep Apnea/ Hypoapnea Syndrome (SAHS), as well as the effectiveness of such treatments, and to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical aspects of this syndrome. Study design: We carried out a meta-analytical, observational and retrospective study by selecting a total of 13 articles, which provided a sample size of 642 diagnosed cases of SAHS. Results: SAHS was more prevalent among males (88.7%) and the average age of diagnosis was 49.75 years old. In the majority of cases, these patients were found to be overweight, with an average body mass index of 28.32 Kg/ m². The average apnea / hypoapnea index was 31.64 ap…
