Genome-wide association analyses identify 18 new loci associated with serum urate concentrations

Elevated serum urate concentrations can cause gout, a prevalent and painful inflammatory arthritis. By combining data from >140,000 individuals of European ancestry within the Global Urate Genetics Consortium (GUGC), we identified and replicated 28 genome-wide significant loci in association with serum urate concentrations (18 new regions in or near TRIM46, INHBB, SFMBT1, TMEM171, VEGFA, BAZ1B, PRKAG2, STC1, HNF4G, A1CF, ATXN2, UBE2Q2, IGF1R, NFAT5, MAF, HLF, ACVR1B-ACVRL1 and B3GNT4). The growth of charged platelets.

Growth models of charged nanoplatelets are investigated with Monte Carlo simulations and simple theory. In a first model, 2-dimensional simulations in the canonical ensemble are used to demonstrate that the growth of a single weakly charged platelet could be limited by its own internal repulsion. The short range attractive interaction in the crystal is modeled with a square well potential while the electrostatic interactions are described with a screened Coulomb potential. The qualitative behavior of this case can also be described by simply balancing the attractive crystal energy with the screened Coulomb repulsion between the crystal sites. Canonical versus microcanonical analysis of first-order phase transitions

Abstract I discuss the relation between canonical and microcanonical analyses of first-order phase transitions. In particular it is shown that the microcanonical Maxwell construction is equivalent to the equal-peak-height criterion often employed in canonical simulations. As a consequence the microcanonical finite-size estimators for the transition point, latent heat and interface tension are identical to standard estimators in the canonical ensemble. Special emphasis is placed on various ways for estimating interface tensions. The theoretical considerations are illustrated with numerical data for the two-dimensional 10-state Potts model.

Cytochemical Cell Typing of Metastatic Tumors According to their Cytoskeletal Proteins

Conventional staining methods alone are often insufficient to make accurate histodiagnosis of malignant tumors. However, additional information about the cell type and the state of differentiation of tumor cells can be provided by several molecular markers. To be relevant diagnostically, these markers must be conservative, i.e. expressed not only in well differentiated tumors but also in poorly differentiated tumors and in metastases. These criteria are fulfilled by certain components of the cytoskeleton, notably the proteins forming the intermediate-sized filaments (IFs) and the desmosomal plaque proteins.

Global change has caused a worldwide increase in reports of Vibrio-associated diseases with ecosystem-wide impacts on humans and marine animals. In Europe, higher prevalence of human infections followed regional climatic trends with outbreaks occurring during episodes of unusually warm weather. Similar patterns were also observed in Vibrio-associated diseases affecting marine organisms such as fish, bivalves and corals. Basic knowledge is still lacking on the ecology and evolutionary biology of these bacteria as well as on their virulence mechanisms. Effect of blastfurnace slag addition to Portland cement for cationic exchange resins encapsulation

In the nuclear industry, cement-based materials are extensively used to encapsulate spent ion exchange resins (IERs) before their final disposal in a repository. It is well known that the cement has to be carefully selected to prevent any deleterious expansion of the solidified waste form, but the reasons for this possible expansion are not clearly established. This work aims at filling the gap. The swelling pressure of IERs is first investigated as a function of ions exchange and ionic strength.
