Haptic Perception in Extreme Obesity: qEEG Study Focused on Predictive Coding and Body Schema
2020
Haptic perception (HP) is a perceptual modality requiring manual exploration to elaborate the physical characteristics of external stimuli through multisensory integrative cortical pathways. Cortical areas exploit processes of predictive coding that collect sensorial inputs to build and update internal perceptual models. Modifications to the internal representation of the body have been associated with eating disorders. In the light of this, obese subjects were selected as a valid experimental model to explore predictive coding in haptic perception. To this purpose, we performed electroencephalographic (EEG) continuous recordings during a haptic task in normally weighted versus obese subjec…
A Line Impedance Calculator Based on a G3 PLC Modem Platform
2022
Power line communication (PLC) is one of the most today used technologies for both automatic meter reading and many other smart grid applications. In this framework, a characterization of the electrical network in the PLC frequency range is needed in terms of impedance measurement and received signal level. This can allow choosing the most suitable and less noisy frequency ranges for PLC transmission. Usually, these characterization measurements are performed with dedicated instrumentation and in the absence of mains voltage. This article wants to propose an alternative solution, which allows these kinds of measurements to be performed using electronic boards currently used as on-field appl…
Grid-Following and Grid-Forming MODELS in ATP-EMTP for Power Systems Simulation
2022
The paper presents the models of grid-following and grid-forming converters in the software ATP-EMTP for power systems simulation. The models are developed using the MODELS language, they are described in details discussing all issues and aspects related to the implementation, and they are also shared as open source models. The models are validated with a simulation-based approach, comparing the results with the models developed in MATLAB/Simulink and in NEPLAN, considering both the phasor RMS and EMT time domains, and thus performing a comprehensive cross-platform and cross-domain validation. In line with the spirit of the ATP software and community, the models of grid-following and grid-f…
Uncertainty evaluation in load flow analysis: real MV distribution networks case studies
2018
This work investigates the measurement uncertainty impact on load flow analysis in medium voltage (MV) distribution networks. The considered algorithm is a simplified load flow algorithm (LFA), developed by authors, which is based on the load power measurements at each secondary substation and one voltage measurement at the slack bus (i.e. the voltage at the MV bus bars of the primary substation). In the viewpoint of a real implementation, to reduce monitoring system costs, the LFA makes use of low voltage (LV) load power measurements for all the substations except those of MV users, where MV transducers are usually already installed. The uncertainties on LFA input quantities (load powers a…
Consequential life cycle assessment of the Italian power system
2022
Energy production and consumption contribute to 76% of the European greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2018, and 90% of global GHG emissions with land use, land use change and forestation (LULUCF) in the same year. By applying energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) technologies, the GHG emission intensity of the energy sector reduced by 1.3% in 2018 compared to the previous year. The current climate change policy aims at decarbonization, sustainable environment, economic prosperity and social equity. It requires the deep decarbonisation of the economies, meaning that the energy and power systems as well as other emission intensive sectors need to transform into zero-emission ones. …
Le geste enfantin de l'Antigone de Jean Anouilh
2016
In his version of the myth of Antigone (1944), Jean Anouilh sets the story in the contemporary context, opposing a revolted woman and a responsible, conscious ruler who tries to save his niece from death, no matter what it takes. Their confrontation shows that their motivations are unconciliable. Creon’s reasons are those of a wise and tired man who is afraid of being lonely while getting old and who considers power as a heavy duty. Therefore, Antigone’s reasons seem to be childish, while her stubbomness and impetuosity prove that she’s not a maturę person able to settle the argument. The consequence of her decisions will be her own death, as well as the one of her flance, and Creon will be…
The Simple and the Complex Nature of Humor and Laughter in Finnish-Chinese Negotiations
2016
This paper explores humor and laughter as sites of search for common ground and power positioning in the context of Finnish-Chinese co-operation. It is mainly based on the data obtained by interviewing individuals who work either for local governments in Finland or one of the state agencies responsible for attracting foreign investment. The study uses Positioning theory by Harré (1991) and Politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1987) when analyzing expressions regarding humor between the Finns and the Chinese. Humor and laughter are seen as integral to co-operation and at times can assist in finding common ground and improving the atmosphere at meetings. At the same time, perceived differ…
S. Toscano, Tolle Divitem. Etica, Società e Potere nel De Divitiis, Catania, Edizioni del Prisma, 2006
2010
Review of the monograph by S. Toscano that proposes an original interpretation of De Divitiis, a text generally linked to the environment of the Pelagian cells of Sicily. The book is divided into three parts: one focusing on the ideology of wealth; one on De Divitiis' society; the last on power dynamics.
Photography, sport and the hegemony of men : a material(-)discursive perspective
2023
In this article, the focus is on a theoretical discussion about how to analyse masculinities and power in historical research based on imagery and visual sources from a material-discursive point of departure. The argument is that analysing photographs in sport and the material-discursive representation of men/masculinities could contribute to a broader understanding of men’s hegemony. The article adds to the field of visual literacy and connects research on visual materials, sports history and critical gender studies. The past of Swedish ice hockey constitutes the case, while the understanding of men/masculinities departs from research by Jeff Hearn, Raewyn Connell and other scholars within…
Khaldūn: “Solidarietà e cambiamento”
2021
Khaldūn has been compared to Machiavelli, Bodin, Vico, Montesquieu, Adam Smith, Condorcet, Hegel, August Comte, Herbert Spencer and many other Western thinkers. His economic analysis has been compared to that of Marx. Although many associate his work with that of sociology and the social sciences, because of its focus on the observation of reality, others question this analogy because of the absence of a scientific method. His pioneering reflections and some of the concepts he developed, such as that of solidarity, still appear to be of extreme heuristic value for the social sciences from an unprecedented point of view.
