Dynamic Energy Budget model parameter estimation for the bivalve Mytilus californianus: Application of the covariation method
2014
Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models serve as a powerful tool for describing the flow of energy through organisms from assimilation of food to utilization for maintenance, growth and reproduction. The DEB theory has been successfully applied to several bivalve species to compare bioenergetic and physiological strategies for the utilization of energy. In particular, mussels within the Mytilus edulis complex (M. edulis, M. galloprovincialis, and M. trossulus) have been the focus of many studies due to their economic and ecological importance, and their worldwide distribution. However, DEB parameter values have never been estimated for Mytilus californianus, a species that is an ecological domin…
An assessment of regulation, education practices and socio-economic perceptions of non-native aquatic species in the Balkans
2021
Alongside climate change, the introduction of non- native species (NNS) is widely recognized as one of the main threats to aquatic biodiversity and human wellbeing. Non-native species and biodiversity are generally low priority issues on the political agendas of many countries, particularly in European countries outside the European Union (EU). The objectives and tasks of this study were to address the policy regulation, education level, education practices, and socioeconomic perceptions of NNS in the Balkans. A questionnaire based survey was conducted in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Turkey (Balkan EU candidate and potential candidate members), in Croatia…

Seismotectonics of the active thrust front in southwestern Sicily: hints on the Belice and Selinunte seismogenic sources
2014
We present a seismotectonic model of the active thrust front in western Sicily, which includes the area hit by the 1968 Belice earthquake sequence. The ~40 km long South-WEstern Sicilian Thrust (SWEST) is formed by two aligned albeit non-parallel fault arrays, the Granitola-Castelevetrano Thrust System (GCTS) in the west and the Partanna- Poggioreale Thrust System (PPTS) in the east. The ~NE-SW trending, NW-dipping GCTS straddles from the Pelagian coastline to Castelvetrano, is ~18 km long and composed of two segments, with the northern, ~12 km long one showing geodetic and geologic evidence of active deformation (Barreca et al., 2014). The segment is marked by a sharp gradient in Different…
Mesozoic tectonics and volcanism from Tethyan rifted continental margins in western Sicily
2009
Tectonic and volcanic features from the Jurassic-Cretaceous carbonate successions of Rocca Busambra, Balatelle Mount and Vicari-Roccapalumba (central-western Sicily), are here described. These areas represent the easternmost outcrops of the Trapanese domain in Sicily. The Trapanese succession consists of shallow to deep-water Meso-Cenozoic deposits formed in a carbonate platform to pelagic plateau depositional setting. Detailed field work and structural analysis detected indicate the occurrence of paleofaults with different orientation, unconformity surfaces, lateral facies changes, resedimented materials and volcanic products (pillow lavas and tuffitic deposits). These data combined with f…
Architecture and Pliocene to Recent evolution of the offshore prolongation of the Granitola - Castelvetrano Thrust System (Sicily Channel)
2014
High-resolution, seismic profiles were recorded in the offshore of Mazara - Punta Granitola with the purpose of reconstructing the architecture and Pliocene to Recent evolution of the south-west prolongation of the Granitola- Castelvetrano Thrust System, identified as an active structure possibly related to destructive historical earthquakes (Barreca et al., 2014; Ferranti et al., this meeting). A number of seismic units were identified. The oldest one is interpreted as representative of the Lower Pliocene pelagic deposits known in the region as Trubi. Lower-middle Pleistocene calcarenites are widespread along the continental shelf (CS) between Mazara del Vallo while their top rapidly deepe…
Bathy-morphological analysis of submarine canyons across the north-western Sicily continental slope
2016
We present here the results of the morpho-bathymetric analyses of the main submarine canyons along the upper slope off the north-western Sicily. This region developed during the Neogene as the transition area between the Sicilian fold and thrust belt and the Tyrrhenian basin realm. Along the upper slope, a dense network of submarine canyon develops from 80 m water depth up to more than 2000 m, showing a large variability of sizes and morphology. In this area submarine canyons play a crucial role related to the along-slope sedimentary transport and are among the most distinctive features of the submarine seascape. This study is based on a quantitative analysis of a high resolution multibeam …
