GENESIS AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL EVOLUTION OF DEEP-SEATED GRAVITATIONAL SLOPE DEFORMATIONS: AN EXAMPLE OF DATING IN WESTERN SICILY
2010
The study area lies in the westernmost part of the Sicani Mountain range where a superposition of SE-trending, stacked, geological bodies crops out. this structure is the result of transpressive tectonic phases of Miocene and Lower Pliocene age. The neo-autochthon outcrops are made up of clay–marly deposits of the Middle–Upper Pliocene, and of calcarenites of Pleistocene age. The extensional Quaternary tectonic phases later dissected and dismembered the original structure, thus involving the calcarenites that show clear, mainly NE–SW oriented dislocations. Such calcarenites, which have a total thickness of about 80 metres, overlap the Belice marly-arenaceous formation. This determined favou…
Deep-seated gravitational slope deformations in western Sicily: Controlling factors, triggering mechanisms, and morphoevolutionary models
2014
Abstract A study of deep-seated gravitational slope deformation (DSGSD) phenomena affecting areas of various geological and geomorphological settings in western Sicily is described. Western Sicily is underlain by a thin-skinned imbricate wedge of Meso–Cenozoic carbonate and siliciclastic rocks that formed by the stacking of several thrust nappes over the Iblean foreland. Locally, the original thrust sheets are folded and cut by high-angle faults. Large areas of western Sicily now display high relief energy due to Plio-Pleistocene block-faulting and uplifting, and the Quaternary morphogenetic phases are characterised by incision, thereby triggering widespread DSGSDs. To identify controlling …
L'infrastruttura scomparsa.
2014
The vanishing infrastructure. The new ground of the Sagrera High-Speed railway station in Barcelona The current railway station mega-project in Barcelona Sagrera highlights the link between the construction of the new High- Speed station and a vast linear park that will cover the existing railroad tracks. In the framework of one of the largest and most ambitious railway and urban redevelopment projects currently underway in all of Europe, this article focuses on the subordination of the Station to the park, which apart from being a mere issue of location (the station is literally under the park), can be reframed within a theoretical debate on the role of architecture in these truly signific…
2021
In his first five Books of Historical Library Diodorus pays a particular attention to the lands of Atlantic Far West. Even if the historian does not show to be particularly interested in geographical descriptions and cartography, nevertheless he often portrays the background of mythical stories happening in western areas according to patterns which, in a sort of symmetrical correspondence, are similar to the historian’s representation of events involving the geographical areas of the Asian Far East. Diodorus has a “continuistic” view of the development of civilisation in all parts of the world known until then. The geography of the mythical past is fully consistent with that of Diodorus’ ow…
2020
This paper describes the hinterland between Palermo and Solunto (north-western Sicily). The focus is the distribution of settlements, linked to the geomorphological context, the potential resources and the ancient route system. The analysis ranges from the Archaic to the Middle Ages, when some relevant sites – both from an economic and strategic point of view – are part of the properties of the Teutonic Order. Some important routes cross the area, both in the SW direction, towards Monte Iato, and in the SE direction, towards the area of influence of the Greek colony of Himera. The analysis is carried out using toponymy and historical cartography, associated with the few archaeological data …

2019
Yoko Tawada is a famous German-Japanese author she lives since 1982 in Germany, where she writes in Japanese and German. Sudabeh Mohafez is a German-Iranian author that she lives since 1979 in Germany and she writes only in German. This essay examines how Tawada and Mohafez approach the native country in their works. The focus of this study intends to show what different identity processes have each writers and how they are described in Akzentfrei, 2016 of Tawada and Wüstenhimmel Sternenland, 2004 of Mohafez.
Die vielgestaltige Wassermetaphorik bei Yoko Tawada
2018
The famous German-Japanese author Yoko Tawada lives since 1982 in Germany, where she writes in Japanese and German. This essay examines the multiform metaphor of water in the works of the writer. Furthermore, the study explores the apparently close relations between water, with its continuous changes, and the existence of a fixed identity. This paper also questions how water (a metaphor for identity) in many passages of the selected texts, is sought and rejected but also feared, desired and modified by the protagonists.
