Is Green Harvesting a Useful Instrument to solve Market Problems in the Wine Sector? Some Lessons from Sicily

The green harvesting (GH) policy measure has been introduced in Italy starting from the 2009/2010 wine season, with the goal of preventing market crises by reducing the yield of a given parcel to zero. In the 2010-2012 period, almost 85% of the national expenditure and about 81% of European Union (EU) expenditure for this measure have been showered on Sicily. Olive oil is one of the most important food products throughout the Mediterranean Basin due to its high nutritional and dietetic value. In recent years, there has been increased interest in the sterols of olive oil for their health benefts and their importance to virgin olive oil quality regulation. The impact of sterols on the human health is proved by several studies, showing that a suffcient quantity of β-sitosterol inhibits the intestinal absorption of LDL-cholesterol. In olive oil the phytosterol concentration ranges from 800 to 2600 mg kg-1. Metallic nanoparticle enrichment at low temperature, shallow CO2 seeps in Southern Italy

We report on metal enrichment along a natural pH gradient owing to increased CO2 degassing at cold, shallow seeps of Vulcano Island in the Mediterranean Sea, off Sicily. We assessed composition of unfiltered and filtered seawater (<100 nm) along acidic zones ranging between ambient and pH 5, and showed that most seep derived elements are present as nanoclusters which then aggregate into larger colloids while mixing with ambient seawater along a pH gradient. The publication of the Max-Weber-Gesamtausgabe volumes, including his letters and a recent study of Hinnerk Bruhns, have revised the canonical view on Weber as a German nationalist. With a conceptual and rhetorical analysis of his essays Deutschland unter europäischen Weltmächten (1916) and Zum Thema Kriegsschuld (early 1919), I offer an alternative view on Weber’s relationship to European politics. He defended the ‘Westphalian’ system of balance between great powers, to which he wanted after the end of the War to incorporate Woodrow Wilson’s plans for a new League. Background The neurological manifestations in the West Nile virus infections are present in less than 1% of the diagnosed cases, neurological manifestations which may take many different forms, from encephalitis, meningitis, GuillainBarre syndrome, optic neuritis to polio-like manifestations. We aimed to evaluate the clinical and paraclinical aspects of the cases presenting neurological infections caused by the West Nile virus diagnosed and treated in our clinic.

Against the backdrop of the partly normative, partly empirical policy framework, the major regional industrial policy documents of the African Union, EAC, ECOWAS, SACU and SADC are examined as to their applicability. The empirical cases of the West African dairy and textile value chains are used to discuss the difficulties of regional priority-setting. The precise roles of (a) regional financial institutions, (b) regional development aid, including the panoply of ‘private sector development’ (PSD) projects and (c) regional business associations are defined.
