Nutrient intake of endurance runners with ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet and regular western diet

During an endurance run (1,000 km in 20 days) it was investigated whether an ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet (OLVD) could cover the nutritional requirements of endurance athletes. A regular western diet (RWD) was used as reference. Both diets were offered with an energy content of 4,500 kcal per day and an energy percentage of carbohydrate:fat:protein of 60:30:10. The runners were divided into two dietary groups according to their usual dietary habits. The results of the 55 participants who completed the race show that runners from both groups had the same intake of energy, carbohydrate, fat and protein. Cells with low enzyme activity are more sensitive to induced DNA damage and may confer a higher carcinogenic risk to the individuals in question. The occurrence of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) has been described in sera of patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). The significance of this finding remains uncertain and the nature of the target antigen(s) has not yet been defined. We studied 32 sera from patients with AIH type-I and prepared extracts of human neutrophils to identify the target antigen(s). A 43 kDa dominant immunoreactive protein was found and identified as the cytoskeletal component actin. Initial studies to define the antigenic determinants identified three different actin domains.

We report a case of eosinophilic meningitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis in a patient who returned from Thailand. The presence of a compatible epidemiologic history and eosinophilia in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lead to the diagnosis, which was confirmed by detection of specific antibodies. After treatment with albendazole and corticosteroids he recovered completely.

NUCB2 is an EF-hand Ca2+ binding protein that has been implicated in various physiological processes like calcium homeostasis, hypothalamic regulation of feeding and TNF receptor shedding.
