Determination of Platinum-Group Elements (PGE) from catalytic converters in soil by means of docimasy and INAA.
1996
The nickelsulfide fire assay (docimasy) for the enrichment of platinum-group elements (PGEs) has been modified for the use with small samples and combined with instrumental neutron-activation analysis (INAA). This procedure has been applied to the determination of PGEs exhausted from catalytic converters and deposited in soil near the Wiesbadener Kreuz (highway A3, Frankfurt-Koln). Our results show a considerable enhancement of the Pt (up to 330 ng/g), Pd (6.6 ng/g) and Rh (7.5 ng/g) contents close to the highway.
Inequalities in undernutrition among Roma and non-Roma children in Western Balkans: an analysis of the determinants
2022
Childhood undernutrition affects physical and cognitive growth and is strongly associated with morbidity and mortality. Roma children in Western Balkans display to date incomparably higher levels of undernutrition, compared to non-Roma children. Employing logistic regression models, we explore the determinants of such dramatic differences using Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys carried out in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia in the period 2011-2013 and 2018-2020. Children’s age, number of children in the household, type of place of residence and age of the mother at birth are found be especially important factors. In particular, we find substantial differences …
Spleen Tyrosine Kinase (SYK) in the Progression of Peritoneal Fibrosis Through Activation of the TGF-β1/Smad3 Signaling Pathway.
2019
BACKGROUND Long-term exposure to hypertonic and high glucose in peritoneal dialysis fluid can result in peritoneal fibrosis. Spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) has a role in inflammation and fibrosis. This study aimed to investigate the role of SYK in an in vivo rat model of peritoneal fibrosis and in rat peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) in vitro and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats (N=24) were randomized into the sham control group (N=6); the peritoneal fibrosis group (N=6) treated with intraperitoneal chlorhexidine digluconate; the SYK inhibitor group (N=6), treated with chlorhexidine digluconate and fostamatinib; and the TGF-s inhibitor grou…
A New Extraordinary Dream: A Study of Late-Qing Foreign Fiction Translations from the Perspective of Titology
2022
In the early stage of the introduction of foreign fiction to Chinese readers, newspapers and magazines played a pioneering role in the development of the discourse on the social role of fiction in modern Chinese society. This is particularly true for Shanghai newspaper Shenbao, which introduced a large number of Western novels, trying to fuel readers’ curiosity while avoiding any possible discomfort caused by foreignising or destabilising content. As a privileged type of paratext and the first element with whom readers came into contact, titles and their translations were key elements for promoting the new literary section and increasing daily sales. By adopting the theoretical framework of…
Chiral anomalies in even and odd dimensions
1985
Odd dimensional Yang-Mills theories with an extra ‘topological mass” term, defined by the Chern-Simons secondary characteristic, are discussed. It is shown in detail how the topological mass affects the equal time charge commutation relations and how the modified commutation relations are related to non-abelian chiral anomalies in even dimensions. We also study the SU(3) chiral model (Wess-Zumino model) in four dimensions and we show how a gauge invariant interaction with an external SU(3) vector potential can be defined with the help of the Chern-Simons characteristic in five dimensions.

Stress response in mesoangioblast stem cells
2006
Stem cells are presumed to survive various stresses, since they are recruited to areas of tissue damage and regeneration, where inflammatory cytokines and cytotoxic cells may result in severe cell injury. We explored the ability of mesoangioblasts to respond to different cell stresses such as heat, heavy metals and osmotic stress, by analyzing heat shock protein (HSP)70 synthesis as a stress indicator. We found that the A6 mesoangioblast stem cells constitutively synthesize HSP70 in a heat shock transcription factor (HSF)-independent way. However, A6 respond to heat shock and cadmium treatment by synthesizing HSP70 over the constitutive expression and this synthesis is HSF1 dependent. The e…
Studies of Components of the Thylakoid Membrane of Undamaged and Damaged Spruce Trees at Different Mountain Sites
1993
During a five-year period, components of the thylakoid membrane in needles of the second generation of undamaged and damaged trees of Norway spruce were studied at three different mountain sites in West Germany. Visible signs of damage at these sites are a yellowing of the light-exposed sides of the needles as well as the loss of needles. The goal of this study was to determine damage-induced alterations in composition and physiological reactions of the thylakoid membranes in spruce needles. In order to meet this purpose, contents of chlorophyll a and b, electron transport rate of photosystem II, contents of the D 1 protein, cytochrome f, as well as P-700 were measured. The chlorophyll cont…
TFIIH Operates through an Expanded Proximal Promoter To Fine-Tune c-myc Expression
2004
A continuous stream of activating and repressing signals is processed by the transcription complex paused at the promoter of the c-myc proto-oncogene. The general transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) is held at promoters prior to promoter escape and so is well situated to channel the input of activators and repressors to modulate c-myc expression. We have compared cells expressing only a mutated p89 (xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group B [XPB]), the largest TFIIH subunit, with the same cells functionally complemented with the wild-type protein (XPB/wt-p89). Here, we show structural, compositional, and functional differences in transcription complexes between XPB and XPB/wt-89 cells at t…
