Genome Wide Association Scan identifies new variants associated with a cognitive predictor of dyslexia

2018

AbstractDevelopmental dyslexia (DD) is one of the most prevalent learning disorders among children and is characterized by deficits in different cognitive skills, including reading, spelling, short term memory and others. To help unravel the genetic basis of these skills, we conducted a Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS), including nine cohorts of reading-impaired and typically developing children of European ancestry, recruited across different countries (N=2,562-3,468).We observed a genome-wide significant effect (p<1×10−8) on rapid automatized naming of letters (RANlet) for variants on 18q12.2 withinMIR924HG (micro-RNA 924 host gene;p= 4.73×10−9), and a suggestive association on 8q1…

Trans-ancestral GWAS of alcohol dependence reveals common genetic underpinnings with psychiatric disorders

2018

AbstractLiability to alcohol dependence (AD) is heritable, but little is known about its complex polygenic architecture or its genetic relationship with other disorders. To discover loci associated with AD and characterize the relationship between AD and other psychiatric and behavioral outcomes, we carried out the largest GWAS to date of DSM - IV diagnosed AD. Genome - wide data on 14,904 individuals with AD and 37,944 controls from 28 case / control and family - based studies were meta - analyzed, stratified by genetic ancestry (European, N = 46,568; African; N = 6,280). Independent, genome - wide significant effects of different ADH1B variants were identified in European (rs1229984; p = …

Recycling a genre for news automation: The production of Valtteri the Election Bot

2020

Abstract The amount of available digital data is increasing at a tremendous rate. These data, however, are of limited use unless converted into a user-friendly form. We took on this task and built a natural language generation (NLG) driven system that generates journalistic news stories about elections without human intervention. In this paper, after presenting an overview of state-of-the-art technologies in NLG, we explain systematically how we identified and then recontextualized the determinant aspects of the genre of an online news story in the algorithm of our NLG software. In the discussion, we introduce the key results of a user test we carried out and some improvements that these re…

A Smart Contract Based Recommender System

2019

Nowadays information available on the World Wide Web has reached unprecedented growth and it makes difficult for users to find the most relevant for them. In order to alleviate such issue, Recommender Systems (RSs) have been proposed to collect opinions and preferences about a set of items, process such preferences and build a personalized information access. While the most part of current RSs exploit centralized architecture to provide the service, in this manuscript we propose an alternative approach for building a general purpose RSs that provides to users with more transparent and decentralized rating strategy. Indeed, the proposed framework is built on top of a Distributed Ledger techn…

Reducing disruptive behaviours and improving classroom behavioural climate with class-wide positive behaviour support in middle schools

2017

Disruptive behaviour in classrooms is a significant challenge for learning in schools and a risk factor for students’ academic achievement and a significant source of teachers’ work-related stress. Earlier research shows that clear behavioural expectations, monitoring students’ adherence to them and behaviour-specific praise are effective practices to reduce disruptive behaviour. Although behaviour problems are common in middle schools, most of the interventions have been developed and studied in elementary schools. This randomised study evaluated the effects of a class-wide intervention on classroom behavioural climate and disruptive behaviour, on teacher-experienced stress and on the time…

Multi-Dimensional Acquisition, Representation, and Interaction of Cultural Heritage Tangible Assets

2018

The acquisition, digital representation and interaction of cultural heritage (CH) assets is of high interest for an accurate documentation of our cultural legacy. Detailed studies demand more information on the assets apart from the mere visual appearance or even shape of objects. In this regards, some research works can be found that combine shape with other kind of data, such as radiometric (e.g., IR, thermal radiation, etc.) or semantic information, leading to multi-Dimensional (mD) virtual objects. In this chapter, we review the state of the art of different techniques to deal with mD acquisition of CH tangible assets. We also discuss some representation (e.g., visual, sonic, etc.) and …

Readability and the Web

2012

Readability indices measure how easy or difficult it is to read and comprehend a text. In this paper we look at the relation between readability indices and web documents from two different perspectives. On the one hand we analyse how to reliably measure the readability of web documents by applying content extraction techniques and incorporating a bias correction. On the other hand we investigate how web based corpus statistics can be used to measure readability in a novel and language independent way.

Plant-wide modelling in wastewater treatment: showcasing experiences using the Biological Nutrient Removal Model

2020

Abstract Plant-wide modelling can be considered an appropriate approach to represent the current complexity in water resource recovery facilities, reproducing all known phenomena in the different process units. Nonetheless, novel processes and new treatment schemes are still being developed and need to be fully incorporated in these models. This work presents a short chronological overview of some of the most relevant plant-wide models for wastewater treatment, as well as the authors' experience in plant-wide modelling using the general model BNRM (Biological Nutrient Removal Model), illustrating the key role of general models (also known as supermodels) in the field of wastewater treatment…

A simulation model for wideband MIMO vehicle-to-vehicle fading channels in T-junction propagation environments

2010

In this paper, we propose a high-performance simulation model for wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) fading channels in T-junction propagation environments. The so-called Riemann sum method (RSM) is applied for the parametrisation of the simulation model. Furthermore, the statistical properties of the wideband MIMO V2V channel simulation model, such as the space-time-frequency cross-correlation function (STF-CCF), the two-dimensional spatial cross-correlation function (2D spatial CCF) and the temporal auto-correlation function (ACF) are studied. Finally, the high accuracy of the proposed simulation model is demonstrated by comparing the correlation prope…
