Leisure-time physical activity, weight gain and health : a prospective follow-up in twins

Leisure-time physical activity habits and abdominal adiposity in young adulthood : twin cohort and co-twin control studies
2018
Twin study designs were utilized to investigate how and what types of leisure- time physical activity (LTPA) are associated with abdominal adiposity in young adulthood taking into consideration diet and other selected health factors. The data of two studies were used: the longitudinal FinnTwin16 cohort and the clinical FITFATWIN study. In FinnTwin16, questionnaire data together with self- measured waist circumference (WC) of 3 383 (1 578 men) cohort members at mean ages 24.5 y and 34 y were used to study LTPA level and waist gain. Cross- sectional data of 4 027 (1 874 men) cohort members at mean age 34 y was used to study LTPA modes and WC. In FITFATTWIN study, ten monozygotic (MZ) male twi…
From Claw Crane to Toy Crane: Catching, Courting, and Gambling in South Korea
2022
The claw crane—an arcade game that invites its players to remotely grab a prize with a “claw”—has undergone a long process of development from an eye-catching “steam shovel” to a calculated gambling machine across amusement arcades, train stations, and traveling carnivals. Recently, the claw crane has become a common transmedia object in various consumer outlets around the world, serving today’s “kidults” who are willing to play and be playful with toys as grownups. Especially in South Korea, the claw crane now rewards its players with cutified character plushies, which arguably reflects and resonates with the local sociocultural conventions. In this mixed-methods study, we deconstruct the …
What is “showing” in language?
2022
In this squib, I discuss the issue of showing meaning in language. I consider showing to form a continuum with telling (traditional language use with lexico-grammatical units and processes) and define showing in its purest form as a way of signaling meaning through depiction. For this purpose, showing makes use of relatively gradient and non-conventional means which are not typically considered to belong to language proper. I situate showing together with telling in ontology in which language is conceived as being simultaneously a physical, cognitive and social activity on a par with other such types of activities. In mainstream linguistics, showing has been marginalized and set aside from …

Voicing Bo Carpelan : Urwind's dialogic possibilities
2020
Finnish writer Bo Carpelan (1926-2011) gained unparalleled recognition amongst Finland-Swedish readers at home and others worldwide for his work as a poet and novelist. Yet despite a good deal of his literary output having been translated into English, surprisingly little critical commentary exists for the English reader. This study seeks to fill that gap, discovering as it does the dialogic possibilities inherent in Carpelan's work. Eight scholars separately embarked on a common challenge: to use the critical methodology of Mikhail Bakhtin to read Carpelan's novel Urwind, which won the Finlandia Prize in 1993. The resulting discussions take on topics from art and music to time, to the bord…
Ensemble deep clustering analysis for time window determination of event-related potentials
2023
Objective Cluster analysis of spatio-temporal event-related potential (ERP) data is a promising tool for exploring the measurement time window of ERPs. However, even after preprocessing, the remaining noise can result in uncertain cluster maps followed by unreliable time windows while clustering via conventional clustering methods. Methods We designed an ensemble deep clustering pipeline to determine a reliable time window for the ERP of interest from temporal concatenated grand average ERP data. The proposed pipeline includes semi-supervised deep clustering methods initialized by consensus clustering and unsupervised deep clustering methods with end-to-end architectures. Ensemble clusterin…
