On the angular variation of thermal infrared emissivity of inorganic soils

[1] Land surface temperature (LST), a key parameter for many environmental studies, can be most readily estimated by using thermal infrared (TIR) sensors onboard satellites. Accurate LST are contingent upon simultaneously accurate estimates of land surface emissivity (e), which depend on sensor viewing angle and the anisotropy of optical and structural properties of surfaces. Effects of ice crystal habit on thermal infrared radiative properties and forcing of cirrus

[1] The impact of assumed ice crystal morphology on thermal infrared (IR) radiative properties of subtropical cirrus is quantified. In particular, the crystal-shape-dependent profiles of downwelling and upwelling thermal IR (broadband and spectral) irradiances and the radiative forcing of cirrus (at the top and bottom of the atmosphere) are investigated. The ice nucleating ability of pollen:

Abstract Laboratory tests were conducted of the ice nucleating ability of four kinds of pollen in the immersion and the contact freezing modes. The diameters of the selected pollen were between 25 and 70 μm. The experiments were carried out at the Mainz vertical wind tunnel with freely suspended supercooled droplets at temperatures down to −28 °C. The immersion freezing experiments were conducted with drops of radii between 250 and 375 μm formed from distilled water with a defined amount of pollen added. A Wind Tunnel Study of Turbulence Effects on the Scavenging of Aerosol Particles by Water Drops

Abstract Laboratory experiments are described where the effects of turbulence on the impaction scavenging of aerosol particles by water drops were investigated. During the experiments the drops were freely suspended at their terminal velocities in the Mainz vertical wind tunnel. Turbulence in the tunnel airstream was produced by placing a needle obstruction upstream of the floating drop. The energy dissipation rates e were between 0.03 and 0.5 m2 s−3. The power spectrum covered a range of k values between 102 and 3 × 103 m−1, agreeing with atmospheric observations within this range. The Mineral Dust Cycle in EMAC 2.40: sensitivity to the spectral resolution and the dust emission scheme

This first detailed analysis of the mineral dust cycle in the ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) model system investigates the performance of two dust emission schemes, following the approach of Balkanski et al. (2004) and Tegen et al. (2002), respectively, and the influence of the horizontal model resolution. Here the spectral resolutions T42, T63, T85, and T106 are investigated. A basic sulphur chemistry, enabling the coating of insoluble dust particles to make them soluble, is employed in order to realistically describe the ageing and wet deposition of mineral dust. Further examination of the thermodynamic modification of the inflow layer of tropical cyclones by vertical wind shear

Recent work has developed a new framework for the impact of vertical wind shear on the intensity evolution of tropical cyclones. A focus of this framework is on the frustration of the tropical cyclone's power machine by shear-induced, persistent downdrafts that flush relatively cool and dry (lower equivalent potential temperature, θ<sub>e</sub>) air into the storm's inflow layer. Banner clouds observed at Mount Zugspitze

Abstract. Systematic observations of banner clouds at Mount Zugspitze in the Bavarian Alps are presented and discussed. One set of observations draws on daily time lapse movies, which were taken over several years at this mountain. Identifying banner clouds with the help of these movies and using simultaneous observations of standard variables at the summit of the mountain provides climatological information regarding the banner clouds. In addition, a week-long measurement campaign with an entire suite of instruments was carried through yielding a comprehensive set of data for two specific banner cloud events. A Simple method for estimating the latent heat flux over grass from radiative bowen ratio

Abstract The evaluation of crop evapotranspiration from infrared temperature is usually calculated as the residual component of the surface energy balance. This method has given good results over a full grass canopy cover with unstressed transpiration, in spite of the not well understood meaning of the aerodynamic resistance needed. A simple and more accurate method, which determines the Bowen ratio (β) and the latent heat flux (λE) over a reference grass area without knowledge of surface resistances, is proposed. Real-time weather forecasting in the Western Mediterranean Basin: An application of the RAMS model

Abstract A regional forecasting system based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) is being run at the CEAM Foundation. The model is started twice daily with a forecast range of 72 h. For the period June 2007 to August 2010 the verification of the model has been done using a series of automatic meteorological stations from the CEAM network and located within the Valencia Region (Western Mediterranean Basin). This study presents the analysis of the structure and air mass characteristics of the lower atmosphere during the field campaign PARADE (PArticles and RAdicals: Diel observations of the impact of urban and biogenic Emissions) on Mount Kleiner Feldberg in southwestern Germany during late summer 2011.
