FAULT DETECTION AND DATA PREDICTION FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

2014

In the last few years, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been extensively used as a pervasive sensing module of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) systems in several application fields, thanks to their versatility and ability to monitor diverse environmental quantities. Although wireless sensor nodes are able to perform onboard computations and to share the sensed data, they are limited by the scarcity of energy resources which heavily influences the network lifetime; moreover, the design phase of a WSN requires testing the application scalability prior to actual deployment. In this regard, this dissertation focuses on data prediction to address such crucial tasks as prolonging the network lifet…

A Hybrid Framework for Soft Real-Time WSN Simulation

2009

The design of a wireless sensor network is a chal- lenging task due to its intrinsically application-specific nature. Although a typical choice for testing such kind of networks requires devising ad-hoc testbeds, this is often impractical as it depends on expensive, and hard to maintain deployment of nodes. On the other hand, simulation is a valuable option, as long as the actual functioning conditions are reliably modeled, and carefully replicated. The present work describes a framework for supporting the user in early design and testing of a wireless sensor network with an augmented version of TOSSIM, the de-facto standard for simulators, that allows merging actual and virtual nodes seaml…

Decentralized Synchronization for Zigbee wireless sensor networks in Multi-Hop Topology

2010

Abstract The most effective solution for energy saving in low-rate wireless sensor networks is maintaining each node in a doze state as long as possible. In order to guarantee network connectivity, the intervals at which the network sensors are turned on and off have to be coordinated. We analyze the Zigbee MAC performance in sensor networks deployed in multi-hop topologies. For this networks, critical inefficiencies can arise due to transmissions performed by hidden nodes. We evaluate the impact of different synchronization schemes on the network performance, both in terms of network capacity and in terms of energy consumption. We show how the synchronization function can be opportunistica…

A Heterogeneous Sensor and Actuator Network Architecture for Ambient Intelligence

2014

One of the most important characteristics of a typical ambient intelligence scenario is the presence of a number of sensors and actuators that capture information about user preferences and activities. Such nodes, i.e., sensors and actuators, are often based on different technologies so that types of networks which are typically different coexist in a real system, for example, in a home or a building. In this chapter we present a heterogeneous sensor and actuator network architecture designed to separate network management issues from higher, intelligent layers. The effectiveness of the solution proposed here was evaluated using an experimental scenario involving the monitoring of an office…

Wireless sensor network for Spectrum Cartography based on Kriging interpolation

2012

Dynamic spectrum access with Cognitive Radio (CR) network is a promising approach to increase the efficiency of spectrum usage. To allow the optimization of resource allocation and transmission adaptation techniques, each CR terminal needs to acquire awareness of the state of the time-frequency-location varying radio spectrum. In this paper we present a Spectrum Cartography (SC) approach where CR terminals are supported by a fixed wireless sensor network (WSN) to estimate and update the Power Spectral Density (PSD) over the area of interest. The wireless sensors collaborate to estimate the spatial distribution of the received power at a given frequency using either a centralized or a distri…

A low complexity distributed cluster based algorithm for spatial prediction

2017

Exploiting state information to support QoS in Software-Defined WSNs

2016

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a promising paradigm initially proposed for the wired networks which has the potential to change the way in which networks are designed and managed. Recently, its use has been extended to wireless infrastructure-less networks such as ad-hoc and wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we take inspiration from our previous work where a scheme that extends the SDN paradigm to WSNs - called SDN-WISE - was proposed. Differently from OpenFlow, SDN-WISE is stateful; accordingly in this paper we investigate how state can be used to support different levels of QoS in WSNs. In fact, state can be used to represent the level of congestion of a node and rules can be…

Stability of Positive Systems in WSN Gateway for IoT&IIoT

2020

Modern sensor networks work on the basis of intelligent sensors and actuators, their connection is carried out using conventional or specifically dedicated networks. The efficiency and smooth transmission of such a network is of great importance for the accuracy of measurements, sensor energy savings, or transmission speed. Ethernet in many networks is typically based on the TCP/IP protocol suite. Regardless of whether or not the network transmission is wired or wireless, it should always be reliable. TCP ensures transmission reliability through retransmissions, congestion control and flow control. But TPC is different in networks based on the UDP protocol. The most important here is the tr…

Lifespan-Aware Routing for Wireless Sensor Networks

2010

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have the capability to become the eyes and ears for the future networked society allowing monitoring of any habitat or object's properties remotely and independently of an energy source. Services based on this technology may change the way we monitor and control remote areas and objects. In this paper we propose a different approach to routing data across Wireless Sensor Networks. We argue that a distance-vector protocol using a lifespan-aware metric is a plausible solution to the task of routing information in WSN in a manner that both saves energy of the individual node and manages summarized energy of the system equally and fairly. The concept is designed …

Programming distributed applications with symbolic reasoning on WSNs

2015

Programming Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is a complex task for which existing approaches adopt rigid architectures that are only suitable for specific application fields. In previous papers we introduced a programming methodology and a lightweight middleware based on high-level programming and executable code exchange for distributed processing on WSNs. In this paper, we show how high-level programming can be effectively used on WSNs to implement symbolic reasoning. In order to prove the feasibility of our approach, we present a Fuzzy Logic system where the value updates and the rule evaluations are performed in a distributed way. Through the proposed methodology, we discuss the developm…
