It is often useful or even indispensable to know the locations of the nodes in a wireless sensor network (WSN), from both network functionality and applications point of view. A potential yet one of the most challenging method is to utilize received signal strength indicator (RSSI) for distance estimation. Albeit easily adopted, using of RSSI is notorious for imprecise distance estimates which can lead to inaccuracies in location estimates. This paper introduces a new strategy for data gathering in wireless sensor networks that takes into account the need for both energy saving and for a reasonable tradeoff between robustness and efficiency. The proposed algorithm implements an efficient strategy for retransmission of lost packets by discovering alternative routes and making clever use of multiple paths when necessary; in order to do that we use duplicate and order insensitive aggregation functions, and by taking advantage of some intrinsic characteristics of the wireless sensor networks, we exploit implicit acknowledgment of reception and smart caching of the data.
A Novel Wireless Sensor Network for Electric Power Metering

Wireless sensor network with lightweight and efficient communication infrastructures are today a great interest, both at research and industrial level, as they are the basis for reliable monitoring services. Mesh networks are ideal candidates in this scenario, as they can be very fault-tolerant. After introducing wireless network systems requirements, we show the design of a mesh network routing protocol based on AODV schemas. Its implementation runs on top of low-cost off-the-shelf components, and allowed us to build a custom power meter wireless sensor node.
