Thought Experiments, Justice and Character

A significant number of philosophers seem to assume that the study of thought experiments in light of a series of sketchy examples (and counterexamples) constitutes the best means to advance the philosophical debate. It is not my purpose to deny that thought experiments must play a role in philosophical reflection on moral issues, but to stress the need to complement this methodological resource with other means of understanding that may help us to discern the moral demands we may eventually confront. For, otherwise, one may unkowingly project onto the thought experiment itself a rather elementary comprehension of our moral practices, which may thereby seem confirmed.

AbstractA new study of the patere baccellate from the Tomba del carrettino at Ca’ Morta offers the opportunity to re-examine the typology of the ribbed bowls of Vetulonia/Colmar type and to re-evaluate their funerary contexts. These vessels appear in central and southern Etruria at the end of the eighth and the beginning of the seventh century BC, the site of Vetulonia being considered as their main production site.Ferdinando Sciacca’s (2005) classification of the ribbed bowls of Vetulonia/Colmar type is supported by solid evidence ; it has advanced the subject significantly, but Sciacca’s model nevertheless raises some questions in terms of the hierarchy of the criteria that were chosen.Du…

In questo articolo si espongono tre modelli normativi delle pratiche di disobbedienza civile, rispettivamente i modelli proposti da Thoreau, Gandhi e Rawls. Nel saggio si mostra come i tre modelli non riescono a contemperare due desiderata della giustificazione di una pratica di disobbedienza civile: l'essere sia una manifestazione di serietà di un impegno, che per tanto intende essere un modello per gli altri cittadini, sia una strategia efficace per la eliminazione, o la riduzione del danno derivante da, norme ingiuste.

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Suomen veropolitiikan muutosta vuosien 1987–2007 aikana. Selvitän, miten ja miten paljon Suomen verotus on muuttunut tutkimuksen aikavälillä oikeudenmukaisuuden ja tehokkuuden näkökulmista. Lisäksi tarkastelen sitä, johtaako tehokkuuden ja oikeudenmukaisuuden samanaikainen tavoittelu väistämättä ristiriitaan. Tutkimusmetodinani on policyanalyysi, jota teen sekä laadullisesti että määrällisesti. Määrällisen analyysin aineistoksi on aikaisempaan tutkimukseen nojautuen tunnistettu viisi ilmiötä.
