Effects of migration on women’s psychosocial health

2021

The aim of this chapter is to delineate the effects of migration on women’s psychological health, highlighting the burden that deciding on the journey and tackling the journey can determine at all stages of the migration process, underlining particular dangers women may be exposed. Broad aspects of gender and migration have been presented by Thara and Raman elsewhere in this volume (see Chapter 6), but here our focus is on the Mediterranean region.

Florence Nightingale as a Victorian career woman

2016

The chapter focuses on the role of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) in turning nursing into a trained profession and a viable and respectable career option for Victorian women seeking employment outside of the home. Nightingale's accomplishments and her thoughts on women's lot in life as expressed in her essay "Cassandra", are presented against the backdrop of the ideology of separate spheres which circumscribes women within the domestic domain. The chapter discusses Nightingale's work in British military field hospitals during the Crimean War, her successful efforts to reform the ways in which such hospitals were run, and the establishment of the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses and …

Germanic Women in the Eyes of Law

2018

Germanic laws focused mainly on community and kinship ties, they clearly defined social divisions and organized the life of the community. The law was not to be perceived as a product of the times, it was passed on from generation to generation and conveyed the wisdom of the elder. Every crime against another person or their property, independently of whether it concerned family laws, laws of property or any other laws, had to be compensated in accordance with customary rules as well as the social status of the aggrieved. The paper takes the perspective of social and cultural anthropology and aims to shed some light on the legal situation of women in Germanic laws. The author’s aim is to in…

Like ships passing in the night? Nonstandard work schedules and spousal satisfaction in Finland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom

2020

This study examined the associations of work schedules and spousal satisfaction among Finnish (n = 347), Dutch (n = 304) and British (n = 337) parents. In addition to comparing parents with nonstandard schedule with parents in regular day work, the study examined separately the roles played in spousal satisfaction of morning, evening, night and weekend work and other working time-related variables (working hours, changes in and influence over one’s work schedules and spouse’s work schedule). The three-country data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with a multigroup procedure in Mplus. Little evidence for negative associations of work schedules and related factors with spousal…

Kobieca strona dyskursu onkologicznego. Empiryczne spojrzenie na demokratyzację wiedzy medycznej

2015
