Exceptional women: Female merchants and working women in Italy in the early modern period
2018
The chapter examines the juridical construction of working woman in Italian cities during the medieval to modern period. In fact, the world of work and production had been generally thought by medieval and early modern jurists to be a sphere best left to self-regulation by the interested parties, an autonomous field, if not quite extraneous to the grand systems of Roman and canon law. But many regulatory and legal sources demonstrate the relevance of merchant and working women in the economic system. This sources concern three items, regarding female work and family roles: female membership and activities in the Italian guilds; women’s property and capability to act; the relationship betwee…
European Women Writers Translated into Spanish in the Eighteenth-Century: a Global Approach
2012
In eighteenth-century Spain, translations of women authors (and more generally, their being known -read, but also simply heard of- by the Spanish public) were vital in building of a legitimacy for women's reading, writing and publishing. Due to the lack of intellectual references in their own country, Spanish eighteenth-century women writers had to find predecessors in their contemporaries in Europe, particularly in France, to resignify the figure of the woman writer and intellectual, in an age when discourses on gender and women's presence in new public spaces of sociability and the republic of letters were undergoing significant challenges. The presence of works by female authors translat…

Woman as a mate and comrade of man in H. G. Wells’s "The New Machiavelli"
2019
H. G. Wells’s The New Machiavelli (1911) was the bold statement of the rights of women in the new century. It was, of course, useless to deny that The New Machiavelli had a sexual base. The sexual relations between men and women had come to dominate Wells’s mind, and it was going to be an important topic in his books. Wells’s novel, which is a cry of anger against the oppressive conventions of society, is in part based on autobiographical details of Wells’s own life, his affair in 1908 with Amber Reeves, a brilliant Cambridge graduate. Central to Wells’s doctrines of male-female relationships is his understanding of the duality of love. Wells stresses the importance of two people loving eac…

L’amica geniale in Inghilterra: il caso dell’adattamento radio di Timberlake Wertenbaker
2019
This paper takes into consideration Timberlake Wertenbaker's adaptation of Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend (2016) for the radio. In particular, the focus of the paper is on the first of the four radioplays and on the dramatic strategies used and adaptation choices made by Wertenbaker. We shall focus on the use of two main adult voices (Lena and Lila), the use of the voice over, and the representation of time. The chapter also considers the image of "neapolitanity" offered in the radioplay, the reception with the British audience with respect to the meridionist idea of Southern Italy as poor and violent. I aim to show how, with some exceptions, Wertenbaker somehow manages to push beyond the c…
Rematrice o filatrice? Donne in un’economia di frontiera (Isole Eolie, inizio dell’Ottocento)
2018
The article explores women’s economic agency in the “border economies” of Mediterranean ports and islands, focusing on the case of Stromboli, in the Sicilian Aeolian Archipelago, in the first half of the nineteenth century. The position of women in the public and the private sphere and the lack of relevant contemporary socio-professional categories makes it difficult to identify their activities, although they are crucial to the understanding of coastal societies. The paper stresses the importance of women’s full involvement in the typical pluriactivity of such communities, combining trade with agriculture and seafaring. In Stromboli, travelers’ reports, notarial and judicial sources show a…
Ruch kobiecy w Bośni i Hercegowinie po Dayton oraz jego wpływ na pisarstwo kobiet
2018
The paper discusses the presence of the women's movement in Bośnia and Herzegovina after the Dayton Peace Agreement. The main purpose of the article is to find an answer to the question how feminism after the disintegration of Yugoslavia was developed in Bośnia. During the war and after 1995 there were a number of women's anti-war organizations, which often did not define themselves as a feminist, but in fact were. There are numerous publications presenting the achievements of women especially active in public life. At the same time, academic feminism developed. Ali these events have strengthened the awareness of women in Bośnia and also reflect Bosnian literary writers. There are many inte…
