The Convent of Palermo in the Middle of the Fifteenth Century

2015

The article investigates the finances of eight convents of Palermo in the middle of the fifteenth century, based on archival work conducted on unpublished documents. By comparing the tithes of these eight convents imposed by Pope Eugenius IV in 1443, we find out that the richest of them was. Santa Caterina of the Dominican Order. As a consequence of the tithe imposed by Pope Callistus III in 1456, the economic situation of Palermo's convents had changed, but Santa Caterina remained the most important of them.

2019

In the fourteenth century Preziosa Abbate, widow of Garsiolo de Yvar from Navarre, founded the benedectine convent of S. Maria delle Vergini, in the Cassaro quarter. Since its foundation, it was linked to important and prestigious families of Palermo, was supported by the kings of Sicily and received movable and immovable property, money, and precious objects by lay people of different social classes. In the fifteenth century the number of nuns grew, so maintenance costs increased and the monastery was enlarged, by buying new buildings. The relationship with the secular world was always very strong because the nuns kept close ties with their families; in the convent, besides the nuns, there…

2020

After the Sicilian Vespers (1282) in Palermo the Dominicans played a fundamental role, and conditioned believes and religious practices of women in their sermons, that in the XIIIth and XIVth centuries mainly dealt with heresy, in the XVth century with marriage and the role of women in the society. The Dominicans were chosen by women as witnessess and executors. Albamonte de Falconerio, widow of the knight Giovanni de Camerana Palermo, gave a lot of money and sacred vestments to friar Martino de Panormo, inquisitor of heretics. The countess Benvenuta Mastrangelo and her mother Palma charged the Dominicans to found a convent, that the friars dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. Virgin M…

2021

This chapter aims to reconstruct the history of the political mobilization of Italian women. It focuses on the movement that from the early Seventies involved women active in Sicilian women's associations, political parties, and trade unions and, with them, militants who did not belong to any organization. In particular, the essay analyses the role played by the Italian Communist Party in introducing Italian women to the political arena of democratic Italy. In Sicily, one of the results of this mass mobilization and political participation was the political institutionalization into the Sicilian Regional Women's Council, established on 7 May 1977 with regional law number 272. In this contex…
