Symbolic Domination and Active Power: Femal Roles in Criminal Organizations,

2007

The article is focused on analysing the role of female figures in the mafia criminal organizations. Starting from a comparative analysis of the ways in which - over time - have changed the forms of manifestation of the female power and the male domination in specific criminal contexts (especially in the Cosa Nostra, but not only), we will consider the dialectic of visibility/invisibility, appearance/reality behind which hides the need to respond to the cliché for which the women must be strong but must appear weak; at the same time we will try to understand what are the forms of materialization of women’s power in these contexts and which are the circumstances that make possible their legit…

“Memorycide” and gender violence in a Society of Eastern Europe

2016

This research proposes to explore the nexus between “denied memory” or “wounded memory” and gender violence normalized in a symbolic level of production of meaning. For this respect, the following points will be analyzed: a) the perception of violence in intimate relationships of second generations post-conflict ; b) the impact of the “memory of war” on “cultural perception of violence” among generations of younger, adults and elder and between women and men of same generation. The central thesis of this essay is that in a post-war Serbian society, the memory is collectively “denied” because of Serbs’ stigmatization, and an increase of violent behavior and a greater incorporation of symboli…

Violence against Women and Femicide: an analysis on the murders of foreign women in Italy

2022

AbstractThis paper presents the results of a research on the representations of femicide in the judicial field, in Italy. The use of the term femicide is analysed through the lens of the normative process, examining its social meanings and questioning its political and economic anchoring using the “juridical field” model (Bourdieu 1986). The essay is based on a wide theoretical framework. It starts by highlighting the problems evoked by the term ‘femicide’ (Corradi, et al. 2016; Radford and Russell 1992); its declension in criminal law and jurisprudence through its coding in specific types of offence (Merli 2015). The topics of power and imbalance between the sexes (Goffman 1977) are analys…

Shape-Shifting Tales. Michèle Roberts's Monstrous Women

2010

The book provides an analysis of the representation of women’s bodies and their monstrous metamorphoses in selected short stories by contemporary English writer Michèle Roberts. The author explores the relationship between traditional fairy tales such as the Grimm Brothers’ and Charles Perrault’s, the lives of female saints and Roberts’s counter-narratives, focussing on the analysis of images of sublimed fleshliness and of acts of monstrous violence on the body. The book takes into account relevant Women’s Studies criticism regarding the mother-daughter relationship, as Roberts’s stories question the role of mother figures in traditional fairy tales and hagiography and at the same time rewo…

Una dama dell'architettura a Palermo

2020
