Conversations from a distance. Spanish and French eighteenth-century women writers
2011
By using, in many cases, French female authors of proven prestige as a basis for their activity, Spanish women writers were able to establish themselves in a position which in the eighteenth century, even more in Spain than in France, was still ambiguous and insecure, thus strengthening their aspiration to a new public legitimacy for women´s intellectual and literary activity.
Women in Patriotic Societies: A Spanish Debate in a European Context
2022
This chapter examines in its European context the discussions maintained from 1776 to 1787 over the admission of women to the Economic Society of Madrid, one of the patriotic societies founded in the eighteenth century and representative of Enlightened reforming ideals and models of sociability. The debate assumed a wide resonance and was seen by contemporaries as a turning point, opening up no less than a “political revolution. It was connected, to a larger extent than has been acknowledged up to now, to European discussions about the nature of gender difference, women’s education and their access to public spaces (academies, literary, scientific and reforming societies. Taking place in a …
Feeling Upside Down: Witchcraft and Exclusion in the Twilight of Early Modern Spain
2019
In mid-1812, in the village of Tosos (Zaragoza), more than thirty-two of the inhabitants claimed to be possessed. Most of the population accepted the supernatural explanation of maleficence and cast the blame on one woman, Joaquina Martínez, who was labelled a witch and sorceress and whose life was threatened on several occasions thereafter, until she was definitively expelled from the village. Had this happened in the 16th or 17th century, Joaquina would have been tried and awarded a harsh sentence. Two centuries on from the end of the “witch-hunt”, however, as if in a “looking-glass world”, those brought to trial were her persecutors. The episcopal trial of the so-called “possessed of Tosos…
An analysis of women’s empowerment through microfinance in Flores, Indonesia
2015
Master thesis development management- University of Agder, 2015 The potential of microfinance in poverty alleviation has long been recognized by development practitioners and academicians. However, many scholars are critical about the effectiveness of microcredit programs in women‟s empowerment. Empirical evidences show, that women are in many cases constrained by cultural traditions, and have only limited control over financial resources and money allocation. As there is a variety of cultural traditions in regard to women‟s position, culture can be regarded as an important factor influencing the outcome of microcredit programs. In patriarchal societies, it is the men who dominate in many a…
The voices of the invisible girls : reintegration of former female child soldiers in Burundi
2013
Master thesis in development management - University of Agder 2013 Child soldiers are used in armed groups and forces around the word. Children as young as seven years of age have been reported to actively participate in armed conflict. The phenomenon of child soldiering has become increasingly recognized in recent decades. Females constitute between ten per cent to one third of the fighting forces worldwide. Despite this, girls and women have until recently been highly invisible in both research and intervention programs. Former female child soldiers often experience social exclusion through rejection, marginalization and stigmatization when returning to civilian life, often due to the tra…

High level of plasma estradiol as a new predictor of ischemic arterial disease in older postmenopausal women: the three-city cohort study.
2012
Background Despite evidence that estrogens may be involved in atherothrombosis, the role of endogenous sex steroid hormones in ischemic arterial disease among postmenopausal women remains uncertain. Methods and Results In the Three‐City prospective cohort study of subjects (n=9294) >65 years of age, we investigated the association of total 17β‐estradiol, bioavailable 17β‐estradiol, and total testosterone with the 4‐year incidence of ischemic arterial disease among postmenopausal women who did not use any hormone therapy. We designed a case–cohort study including a random sample of 537 subjects and 106 incident cases of first cardiovascular events. Weighted Cox proportional‐hazards model…
