PECAM-1/CD31 in infarction and longevity.
2007
: Inflammation has recently proven to be associated with the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and inflammatory genes are good candidates for the risk of developing atherosclerosis. The early phase of atherosclerosis involves the recruitment of inflammatory cells from the circulation and their transendothelial migration. This process is mainly mediated by cellular adhesion molecules, which are expressed by the vascular endothelium and by circulating leukocytes in response to several inflammatory stimuli. Adhesion of circulating cells to the arterial surface is among the first detectable events in atherogenesis. Cellular adhesion molecules, expressed by the vascular endothelium and by circulat…
Inhibition of human immunodeficiency virus-1 infection by human conglutinin-like protein: in vitro studies.
1992
The lectin-like protein analogous to bovine conglutinin was purified from human serum. The carbohydrate-binding ability of conglutinin-like protein was inhibited by D-mannose, N-acetylglucosamine and L-fucose as well as by mannan-containing oligosaccharides. By applying a lectin-based ELISA system it was demonstrated that conglutinin-like protein binds to human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) glycoprotein 120 (gp120) via its carbohydrate binding site. In vitro experiments with T-lymphoblastoid CEM cells revealed that conglutinin-like protein abolishes infection by HIV-1; a 50% cytoprotective concentration of 23.9 micrograms/ml was measured. These findings demonstrate that human conglutinin…
Long Term Efficiency Analysis of Infiltration Trenches Subjected to Clogging
2018
Abstract: In recent years, limitations linked to traditional urban drainage schemes have been pointed out and new approaches were developed introducing more natural methods for retaining and/or disposing of stormwater. Such practices include infiltration and storage tanks in order to reduce the peak flow and retain part of the polluting components. The impact of such practices on stormwater quantity and quality is not easily assessable because of the complexity of physical and chemical processes involved. In such cases, integrated urban drainage models may play a relevant role providing tools for long term analysis. In this study, the effect of the clogging phenomenon has been assessed by m…
Effects of adenotonsillectomy on neurocognitive and behavioural function in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
2018
Effects of adenotonsillectomy on neurocognitive and behavioural function in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Objectives: Aim of this study is to verify the presence of neurocognitive, neurobehavioral or sleep disturbances in children affected by adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and verify their improvement after Adeno-Tonsillectomy (AT). Methods: Eighty children suffering from adenotonsillar hypertrophy and OSAS were recruited for AT in the ENT Department of the University of Palermo. All the children underwent clinical evaluation, including rhinofibroscopy for grading the obstruction due to the adenotonsillar hypertrophy (before and 6 …
Energy and economic assessment of desiccant cooling systems coupled with single glazed air and hybrid PV/thermal solar collectors for applications in…
2009
Abstract This paper presents a detailed analysis of the energy and economic performance of desiccant cooling systems (DEC) equipped with both single glazed standard air and hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/t) collectors for applications in hot and humid climates. The use of ‘solar cogeneration’ by means of PV/t hybrid collectors enables the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, which can be directly used by desiccant air handling units, thereby making it possible to achieve very energy savings. The present work shows the results of detailed simulations conducted for a set of desiccant cooling systems operating without any heat storage. System performance was investigated through h…
L'éducation aux valeurs à l'épreuve du socle commun
2010
Having examined values in education since earliest times on the one hand and the formal structuring of curricula throughout the XIXth century on the other hand, we will show how Jules Ferry's programmes are at the junction of two different approaches to moral education. Therefore, we will consider the main changes which structured the way it was taught throughout the XXth century. In France, the setting up of a base for common knowledge and common skills sheds a new light on social and civic skills, autonomy and initiative. These 6th and 7th pillars will compare favourably with other educational programmes, moral and religious, particularly in French-speaking Belgium as well as in Quebec. C…
Open and Closed Words
2017
Combinatorics on words aims at finding deep connections between properties of sequences. The resulting theoretical findings are often used in the design of efficient combinatorial algorithms for string processing, but may also have independent interest, especially in connection with other areas of discrete mathematics. The property we discuss here is, for a given finite word, that of being closed. A finite word is called closed if it has length ≤ 1 or it contains a proper factor (substring) that occurs both as a prefix and as a suffix but does not have internal occurrences. Otherwise the word is called open. We illustrate several aspects of open and closed words and factors, and propose som…
Languages with mismatches
2007
AbstractIn this paper we study some combinatorial properties of a class of languages that represent sets of words occurring in a text S up to some errors. More precisely, we consider sets of words that occur in a text S with k mismatches in any window of size r. The study of this class of languages mainly focuses both on a parameter, called repetition index, and on the set of the minimal forbidden words of the language of factors of S with errors. The repetition index of a string S is defined as the smallest integer such that all strings of this length occur at most in a unique position of the text S up to errors. We prove that there is a strong relation between the repetition index of S an…
