Lorentz harmonics and superfield action. D=10, N=1 superstring

2000

We propose a new version of the superfield action for a closed D=10, N=1 superstring where the Lorentz harmonics are used as auxiliary superfields. The incorporation of Lorentz harmonics into the superfield action makes possible to obtain superfield constraints of the induced worldsheet supergravity as equations of motion. Moreover, it becomes evident that a so-called 'Wess-Zumino part' of the superfield action is basically a Lagrangian form of the generalized action principle. We propose to use the second Noether theorem to handle the essential terms in the transformation lows of hidden gauge symmetries, which remove dynamical degrees of freedom from the Lagrange multiplier superfield.

Student knowledge and learning skill modeling in the learning environment `forces'In order to prevent further delays in publication this paper has be…

1998

Abstract In this paper we present a student module modeling knowledge states and learning skills of students in the field of Newtonian dynamics. Student data recorded during the exploratory activity in microworlds are used to infer mental representations concerning the concept of force. A fuzzy algorithm able to follow the cognitive states the student goes through in solving a task and to interpret the monitored changes is discussed.

A precise measurement of the Z resonance parameters through its hadronic decays

1990

A measurement of the cross section for e+e-→ hadrons using 11 000 hadronic decays of the Z boson at ten different center-of-mass energies is presented. A three-parameter fit gives the following values for the Z mass MZ, the total width ΓZ, the product of the electronic and hadronic partial widths ΓeΓh, and the unfolded pole cross section σ0: MZ = 91.171 ± 0.030 (stat.) ± 0.030 (beam) GeV, ΓZ = 2.511 ± 0.065 GeV, ΓeΓh = 0.148 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.004 (syst.) GeV2, σ0 = 41.6 ± 0.7 (stat.) ± 1.1 (syst.) nb, Good agreement with the predictions of the standard model is observed. From a two-parameter fit the number of massless neutrino generations is found to be Nv = 2.91 ± 0.26. Thus the hypothes…

Pedagogical Practices for Virtual Worlds

2010

As a result from activities carried out within Module 2 of the MUVEnation programme about exploring active learning approaches, we have created a collection of practices for teaching and learning in Virtual Worlds, organised in 21 chapters, classified in the following categories of instructional methods: Presentation, Demonstration, Discussion, Drill-and-practice, Tutorial, Cooperative Learning, Gaming, Simulation and Discovery. The educational professionals who participated in the course worked in teams, but in some cases individually to map and describe the existing range of teaching practices in Second Life, and to draw a reflection about the elements for their success. Practices describ…

Superembedding Approach and S-Duality. A unified description of superstring and super-D1-brane

2001

It is proved that a basic superembedding equation for the 2-dimensional worldsheet superspace $\S^{(2|8+8)}$ embedded into D=10 type IIB superspace $M^{(10|16+16)}$ provides a universal, S-duality invariant description of a fundamental superstring and super-D1-brane. We work out generalized action principle, obtain superfield equations of motion for both these objects and find how the S-duality transformations relate the superfield equations of superstring and super-D1-brane. The superembedding of 6-dimensional worldsheet superspace $\S^{(6|16)}$ into the D=10 type IIB superspace will probably provide a similar universal description for the set of type IIB super-NS5-brane, super-D5-brane an…

Educational Tools for Second Life: a handbook for educators in virtual worlds.

2010

As a result of two collective activities organised during the MUVEnation programme, we have produced a collection of educational tools for Second Life. This collection has been produced in two stages. First, back in September 2008, 33 partcipants in the introductory module worked together in groups for the identification of more than 100 tools used for teaching and learning in Second Life. Later, in March 2009, 55 education professionals (lecturers, researchers, learning technologists and teachers) have collected, tested and fully described more than 150 tools. The result of this collective work has been transformed into a book, published as an Open Educational Resource under CC licence by …

An evaluation of recent local image descriptors for real-world applications of image matching

2019

This paper discusses and compares the best and most recent local descriptors, evaluating them on increasingly complex image matching tasks, encompassing planar and non-planar scenarios under severe viewpoint changes. This evaluation, aimed at assessing descriptor suitability for real-world applications, leverages the concept of approximated overlap error as a means to naturally extend to non-planar scenes the standard metric used for planar scenes. According to the evaluation results, most descriptors exhibit a gradual performance degradation in the transition from planar to non-planar scenes. The best descriptors are those capable of capturing well not only the local image context, but als…

Robotic and virtual World Programming labs to Stimulate Reasoning and visual-spatial Abilities

2013

Abstract The individuals’ cognitive skills, academic performance and their relationship with programming of robots or virtual learning environment is a topic of particular interest in the area of human-robot interaction. This paper presents a pilot study performed on a group of 36 lower secondary school students involved in a 32-hours laboratory based on the combination of LEGO Mindstorm NXT and Microsoft Kodu Game Lab (KGL) and aimed at programming first a robot and further a more complete virtual world based on a narrative-designed scenario. The findings of the research will be discussed in the light of the effectiveness of using robotics and virtual world programming as a meaningful and …
