ETAT: Expository Text Analysis Tool.

2002

Qualitative methods that analyze the coherence of expository texts not only are time consuming, but also present challenges in collecting data on coding reliability. We describe software that analyzes expository texts more rapidly and produces a notable level of objectivity. ETAT (Expository Text Analysis Tool) analyzes the coherence of expository texts. ETAT adopts a symbolic representational system, known as conceptual graph structures. ETAT follows three steps: segmentation of a text into nodes, classification of the unidentified nodes, and linking the nodes with relational arcs. ETAT automatically constructs a graph in the form of nodes and their interrelationships, along with various a…

Stylistic analysis of headlines in science journalism: A case study ofNew Scientist

2016

This article explores science journalism in the context of the media competition for readers’ attention. It offers a qualitative stylistic perspective on how popular journalism colonizes science communication. It examines a sample of 400 headlines collected over the period of 15 months from the ranking of five ‘most-read’ articles on the website of the international magazine New Scientist. Dominant lexical properties of the sample are first identified through frequency and keyness survey and then analysed qualitatively from the perspective of the stylistic projection of newsworthiness. The analysis illustrates various degrees of stylistic ‘hybridity’ in online popularization of scientific r…

Luokasta utopiaan : Erik Olin Wrightin myöhäistuotannosta

2020

Artikkeli keskittyy erityisesti kahteen Wrightin myöhäistuotannon teokseen – Envisioning Real Uto…

Natural Language-Based Knowledge Extraction in Healthcare Domain

2019

There is a growing amount of data in the databases of hospitals. These data could be exploited to alleviate the decision-making process of hospital managers, physicians and researchers. However, these types of end-users often lack the expertise necessary for extracting those data from the database. Several approaches exist in the field of how to allow non-programmers writing queries in a convenient manner, but none of them has yet reached fully satisfactory results. This paper sketches a solution to this problem by introducing means for writing queries in a keywords-containing natural language thus alleviating the query writing process for the end-user. Introducing this approach in the know…

Multilingual Students´ Self-reported Use of their Language Repertoires when Writing in English

2015

Recent research suggests that multilingual students tend to use their complete language repertoires, particularly their L1, when writing in a non-native language (e.g. Cenoz & Gorter 2011; Wang 2003). While there is some international research on the L2 and L3 writing process among bilinguals, the L2/L3 writing process of bilingual and multilingual individuals in the Swedish context remains unexplored (Tholin 2012). This study, carried out in a Swedish secondary school, focuses on 131 bi- and multilingual students’ (age 15-16) self-reported languages of thought while writing an essay in English, which is a non-native language. Drawing on the translanguaging framework (Blackledge & Creese 20…

Il linguaggio mafioso. Scritto, parlato, non detto

2017

The volume aims to show the language of the so called 'mafia'. The main task is the definition of the linguistic and pragmatic boundaries of this notion, The book starts from the paradox of the communication of the mafia. How mafia communicates even though it is an organization based on silence? The volume studies written, spoken and unspoken facts of communication of mafia.

2017

The conditions of language development and preservation are the quality of its acquisition in the early childhood, in-depth usage and study in the educational process and formation of positive and responsible attitude towards language and national literary heritage. The quality of the development of child’s Latvian language is determined by several environmental factors: the language environment in the family, the language environment in preschool, basic and secondary educational institutions and the language environment in public space. In Latgale most children learn Latvian in heterogeneous sociolinguistic environment. Child’s acquisition of the Latvian language in the family occurs in on…
