Semantic Web Services for Smart Devices in a “Global Understanding Environment”

2003

Various Web resources and services are usually assumed to be used and accessed by human users (current Web) or by software agents on behalf of human users (emerging Semantic Web). However industry emerges also a new group of “users”, which are smart industrial devices, robots or any other objects, which can be adapted to the (Semantic) Web environment. They would need special services for e.g. online condition monitoring, information provisioning, remote diagnostics, maintenance support, etc. The goal of this paper is to specify main requirements to Web services that automatically follow up and predict the performance and maintenance needs of field devices. Semantic Web enabled services for…

Semantic Web Services for Smart Devices Based on Mobile Agents

2005

Among traditional users of Web resources, industry has a growing set of smart industrial devices with embedded intelligence. Just like humans, they need online services (i.e., for condition monitoring, remote diagnostics, maintenance, etc.). In this paper, we present one possible implementation framework for such Web services. Such services should be Semantic Web enabled and form a Service Network based on internal and external agents’ platforms, which can host heterogeneous mobile agents and coordinate them to perform needed tasks. The concept of a “mobile service component†assumes not only exchanging queries and service responses, but also delivering and composition of a service pro…

Semantic Web Enabled Web Services: State-of-Art and Industrial Challenges

2003

Semantic Web technology has a vision to define and link Web data in a way that it can be understood and used by machines for automation, integration and reuse of data across various applications. Ontological definition of every resource as it is assumed in Semantic Web, along with new techniques for semantics processing and new vision Intelligent Web Services is expected to bring Web on its new level. At present, Web Services technology is stressed by the search of a right way for further development. Combination of Semantic Web and Web Services concepts may address many of difficulties of existing technology. It is not a question of whether Semantic Web is coming or not, but a question of …

An Integrated Framework for Web Services Orchestration

2009

International audience; Currently, Web services give place to active research and this is due both to industrial and theoretical factors. On one hand, Web services are essential as the design model of applications dedicated to the electronic business. On the other hand, this model aims to become one of the major formalisms for the design of distributed and cooperative applications in an open environment (the Internet). In this article, the authors will focus on two features of Web services. The first one concerns the interaction problem: given the interaction protocol of a Web service described in BPEL, how to generate the appropriate client? Their approach is based on a formal semantics fo…

Proposal of an Architecture to Retrieve Information from Multiple Devices Using Matchmaking Algorithms

2007

Semantic Web services (SWS) propose to extend the traditional Web services technologies on the way to consolidate ontologies and semantics. This makes possible the selection, the integration and the dynamic invocation of services. In this way, services are able to dynamically adapt themselves to changes without human intervention. The main purpose of this paper is to present an algorithm for matching SWS. The algorithm uses the description of the services capabilities to match the semantic values. The traditional matching has been improving using ontologies witch constitutes a step further in the matching algorithms. To implement the algorithm an agent FIPA compliant architecture has been d…

Towards a Framework for Agent-Enabled Semantic Web Service Composition

2004

The article presents the framework for agent-enabled dynamic Web service composition. The core of the methodology is the new understanding of a Web service as an agent capability having proper ontological description. It is demonstrated how diverse Web services may be composed and mediated by dynamic coalitions of software agents collaboratively performing tasks for service requestors. Middle Agent Layer is introduced to conduct service request to task transformation, agent-enabled cooperative task decomposition and performance. Discussed are the formal means to arrange agents’ negotiation, to represent the semantic structure of the task-activity-service hierarchy and to assess fellow-agent…

Semantic Multi-agent Architecture to Road Traffic Information Retrieval on the Web of Data

2013

In this paper, we describe a system based on FIPA standards to help the process of advertisement, discovery, invocation and reuse of traffic information on the web of data. The use of semantic web services (SWS) can be exploited to improve the outcomes in the discovery process, allowing end users to specify their need using concepts not keywords. Most of the traffic information is generally recovered by end users through web forms that specify their requirements, and must refill each time the same parameters to obtain the updated value from the web sites. Using agents besides Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), we will achieve interoperability between systems and also automatize the proces…

A hybrid approach to semantic web services matchmaking

2008

AbstractDeploying the semantics embedded in web services is a mandatory step in the automation of discovery, invocation and composition activities. The semantic annotation is the “add-on” to cope with the actual interoperability limitations and to assure a valid support to the interpretation of services capabilities. Nevertheless many issues have to be reached to support semantics in the web services and to guarantee accurate functionality descriptions. Early efforts address automatic matchmaking tasks, in order to find eligible advertised services which appropriately meet the consumer’s demand. In the most of approaches, this activity is often entrusted to software agents, able to drive re…

A web search methodology for health consumers

2014

Nowadays, many people use the World Wide Web to seek medical and health information but different users, such as providers (e.g., physicians) and consumers (e.g., patients), have different needs and bring different levels of reading ability and prior knowledge. Generic and specific search engines and specialized health sites either do not exploit the whole web or overload users with information. This creates difficulties mainly to consumers who often do not exactly know how to find the desired information. Thus, an information retrieval system for the web that 'drives' the user in finding the relevant information would be very beneficial. This paper describes a web search methodology for he…

Proactively Composing Web Services as Tasks by Semantic Web Agents

2011

This chapter presents the framework for agent-enabled dynamic composition of Semantic Web services. The approach and the framework have been developed in several research and development projects by ISRG and IOG. The core of the methodology is the new understanding of a Semantic Web service as a capability of an intelligent software agent supplied with the proper ontological description. It is demonstrated how diverse Web services may be composed and mediated by dynamic coalitions of software agents collaboratively performing tasks for service requestors. Middle agent layer is introduced to conduct the transformation of a Web service request to the corresponding task, agent-enabled cooperat…
