Recovery of rescuers from a 24-hour shift and its association with physical fitness

2013

The work of rescuers can be physically and psychologically very demanding so it is important for them to have sufficient recovery between work shifts. The purpose of this thesis was to study recovery of rescuers and to see if physical fitness is associated with recovery from work shifts. Heart rate variability (HRV) recordings reflect changes in the autonomic nervous system, and they were used for the analysis of stress and recovery. HRV was recorded for 96 hours, from the beginning of a 24-hour work shift to the beginning of the next shift. Physical fitness assessment included VO2max estimation with a submaximal bicycle ergometer test, and maximal strength testing (isometric bench press an…

Maternal antibody transmission and breeding densities in the Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus

2004

1. The offspring of avian species, especially those of colonial breeders, are exposed to a number of pathogens immediately after birth. The chick's immune system is, at that early stage still immature and inefficient. As a consequence, diseases can have a strong impact on chick survival.2. The ability of mothers to transmit passive immunity in terms of antibodies of their own acquired immunity to their chicks is probably an essential pathway to enhance the chick survival. Since the production of antibodies is costly, females are expected to adjust the transmission of passive immunity to the local disease environment.3. We found that in Black-headed Gulls (Larus ridibundus L.) yolk antibody …

"Awake Surgery" of Slow-Growing Tumors and Cortical Excitability Measured by EEG Recordings. Preliminary Results

2012

International audience; To investigate interhemispheric imbalance following "awake surgeries" of slow-growing tumors we recorded EEG in a visuo-manual RT paradigm. Increase of cortical excitability within the ipsilesional hemisphere was signed by increased ERPs amplitude for two patients. The cortical excitability in the lesioned hemisphere may be increased to maintain performances and cerebral plasticity.

Latvijas Trešās atmodas sociālās atmiņas un komemorācijas diskurss medijos (1988-2014)

2015

Promocijas darbā “Latvijas Trešās atmodas sociālās atmiņas un komemorācijas diskurss medijos (1988–2014)” analizēta Latvijas Trešās atmodas notikumu komemorācija un mediju rituāla realizācija, īpašu uzmanību pievērošot “mēs” un “viņi” diskursa konstrukcijām. Darba teorētisko bāzi veido sociālās atmiņas, nacionālās identitātes, rituālkomunikācijas, komemorācijas un mediju notikuma teorētiskās pieejas. Promocijas darba empīriskās daļas izstrādei ar kvantitatīvās kontentanalīzes palīdzību apkopotas un sistematizētas vairāk nekā 1100 Atmodas notikumiem veltītas preses publikācijas un 350 speciālveltījumi sabiedriskās televīzijas kanālā LTV1 un sabiedriskā radio kanālā LR1 laika posmā no 1988. l…

Effects of operational assessment of the 4:4 and 4:4/6:6 watch systems on sleepiness, fatigue, and stress responses during patrolling on a navy missi…

2022

The operation of naval vessels involves watchkeeping 24 h per day, which is globally carried out by a variety of different watch systems. In this study, the rotating 4:4 and fixed 4:4/6:6 two-section watch systems were compared in terms of sleepiness, fatigue, and stress responses. The data collection took place on a Finnish Defence Forces' (FDF) Navy missile patrol boat with 15 crew members serving as study participants. The data collection periods lasted two separate weeks (7 days, 6 nights) with the different watch systems. The subjective sleepiness of the participants was assessed before and after every watch using the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS). Stress responses were assessed da…

Wake and Turbulence Analysis for Wind Turbine Layouts in an Island

2018

There is a big wind energy potential in supplying the power in an island and most of the islands are off-grid. Due to the limited area in island(s), there is need to find appropriate layout / location for wind turbines suited to the local wind conditions. In this paper, we have considered the wind resources data of an island in Trøndelag region of the Northern Norway, situated on the coastal line. The wind resources data of this island have been analysed for wake losses and turbulence on wind turbines for determining appropriate locations of wind turbines in this island. These analyses are very important for understanding the fatigue and mechanical stress on the wind turbines. In this work,…

Relationship between sleep quality and postural balance in community-dwelling older persons: A cross-sectional study

2019

Brain mapping as helpful tool in brain glioma surgical treatment—Toward the “perfect surgery”?

2018

Gliomas are the most common primary malignant brain tumours in adults, representing nearly 80%, with poor prognosis in their high-grade forms. Several variables positively affect the prognosis of patients with high-grade glioma: young age, tumour location, radiological features, recurrence, and the opportunity to perform post-operative adjuvant therapy. Low-grade gliomas are slow-growing brain neoplasms of adolescence and young-adulthood, preferentially involving functional areas, particularly the eloquent ones. It has been demonstrated that early surgery and higher extent rate ensure overall longer survival time regardless of tumour grading, but nowadays, functional preservation that is as…

Awake Surgery: Skills of Neurosurgeon Matter but Those of Patient Too. How to Optimize Functional Brain Mapping by Improving Per-Operatory Testing?

2011

International audience; It is now possible to perform resections of slowgrowing tumors in awake patients. Using direct electrical stimulation (DES), real-time functional mapping of the brain can be used to prevent the resection of essential areas near the tumor. For now, simple clinical tests are performed on conscious patients and combined with DES in order to discriminate functional and non-functional areas invaded by the tumors. In this work we try to develop a simple device based on a simple technology to better quantify the performances of the patients during the surgery itself and give a real-time feedback to the neurosurgeon that will help to further guide the surgery by improving th…

Local Sleep Slow-Wave Activity Colocalizes With the Ictal Symptomatogenic Zone in a Patient With Reflex Epilepsy

2020

Background: Slow-wave activity (SWA) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep reflects synaptic potentiation during preceding wakefulness. Epileptic activity may induce increases in state-dependent SWA in human brains, therefore, localization of SWA may prove useful in the presurgical workup of epileptic patients. We analyzed high-density electroencephalography (HDEEG) data across vigilance states from a reflex epilepsy patient with a clearly localizable ictal symptomatogenic zone to provide a proof-of-concept for the testability of this hypothesis. Methods: Overnight HDEEG recordings were obtained in the patient during REM sleep, NREM sleep, wakefulness, and during a right facial motor s…
