This article studies the nationalistic rhetoric in Emerson’s “The American Scholar.” It argues that if the current critical tendency to downplay the essay’s nationalism can be seen as a welcome corrective to certain traditional readings, the address, in fact, includes a significant presence of embedded nationalistic rhetoric that has largely been ignored. The study focuses on Emerson ’s incorporation of the language of expansionism and imperialism, his adoption of an ahistorical perspective and his use of the vocabulary of action, heroism and Anglo-Saxonism to show that both the address’s nationalistic rhetoric and Emerson ’s complicity in the nationalistic ideology of his time are more pro…

Sulfonation of the N-Boc derivatives of 1,2-aminoalcohols, such as ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norephedrine, norpseudoephedrine, thiomicamine, and chloramphenicol yields a mixture of the corresponding oxazolidinones with inversion (erythro derivatives) and/or retention of configuration (threo derivatives)at C5. We suggest a competition between two mechanisms: an intramolecular SN2 process initiated by attack of the carbonyl oxygen of the Boc group to the benzylic carbon and the other one through a double SN2 process. Cholesterol reacts under Appel conditions (CBr4/PPh3) to give 3,5-cholestadiene (elimination) and 3β-bromocholest-5-ene (substitution with retention of configuration). Thus, the bromination of cholesterol deviates from the stereochemistry of the standard Appel mechanism due to participation of the Δ5 π-electrons. In contrast, the subsequent azidolysis (NaN3/DMF) of 3β-bromocholest-5-ene proceeds predominantly by Walden inversion (SN2) affording 3α-azidocholest-5-ene. Liquid structure of a choline chloride-water natural deep eutectic solvent: A molecular dynamics characterization

The liquid structure of a representative of the first water-in-salt (WiS) Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES), hereinafter indicated as aquoline, a mixture of choline chloride (ChCl) and water with molar ratio 1:3.33, is ex- plored at ambient conditions. Using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation tools, we extract structural informa- tion at atomistic level on the nature of inter-correlations between the different moieties. Despite being a very fluid liquid, with much lower viscosity than other common ChCl-based DES, aquoline turns out to be very struc- tured.
