Identification of new hardy ferns that preferentially accumulate light rare earth elements: a conserved trait within fern species

2020

Environmental contextRare earth elements (REEs) are strategic metals and emerging contaminants for which plant-based remediation measures are needed. We screened a collection of hardy ferns and identified new accumulator species that preferentially transferred light REEs to their fronds. This study is an important step towards understanding the mechanisms of REE accumulation in plants. AbstractRare earth elements (REEs) include the lanthanides plus yttrium and scandium, and can be split according to their atomic mass into light (LREEs) and heavy REEs (HREEs). The increasing demand for REEs is mainly driven by new technologies, and their current low recyclability has led them to become emer…

A Restricted-Weakly Connected Dominating Set for Role Assignment in a Multichannel MAC for Wireless Mesh Network

2009

International audience; We propose an efficient way of constructing the wireless mesh structure associated with Molecular MAC, a multichannel access method designed for efficient packet forwarding. We base our role assignment on a restricted Weakly Connected Dominating Set structure. After presenting a formal definition of the role assignment problem, we prove its NP-completeness. Then, we propose a centralized 2-approximation algorithm that maximizes the sum of radio link capacities in the molecular structure. Finally, we extend this protocol so that it can operate in a distributed way still providing the same guarantee. This distributed protocol is self-stabilizing thus robust to topology…

Derek Mahon's Literal Littorals

2012

International audience; A transversal reading of Derek Mahon's poems reveals his predilection for coastal landscapes: vistas of sea and seashore, harbour towns or seaside resorts. Suffused as they are with elemental symbolism (waves, wind, rain and storm, rocks, cliffs and misty piers), those liminal spaces take on a metaphysical dimension. The landscapes that the poet invests are the objective correlatives of his sense of alienation and vulnerability; they are mindscapes (paesagio mentale or reflections of the inner self) as much as territories to be paced and explored. This paper thus examines how the natural and the urban, the visual and the acoustic, the a-temporal and the modern or pos…

Influence of the Novelty-Seeking Endophenotype on the Rewarding Effects of Psychostimulant Drugs in Animal Models

2015

Novelty seeking (NS), defined as a tendency to pursue novel and intense emotional sensations and experiences, is one of the most relevant individual factors predicting drug use among humans. High novelty seeking (HNS) individuals present an increased risk of drug use compared to low novelty seekers. The NS endophenotype may explain some of the differences observed among individuals exposed to drugs of abuse in adolescence. However, there is little research about the particular response of adolescents to drugs of abuse in function of this endophenotype, and the data that do exist are inconclusive. The present work reviews the literature regarding the influence of NS on psychostimulant reward…

Fuzzy topology discovery protocol for SDN-based wireless sensor networks

2017

Abstract The growing trend in pervasive systems forces traditional wireless sensor networks to deal with new challenges, such as dynamic application requirements and heterogeneous networks. One of the latest paradigms in this area is software defined wireless sensor network. According to the paradigm, the networks take care of managing topological information and forwarding decisions using a bipartite architecture in which a control plane decides the forwarding policies and the data plane (i.e. ordinary sensor nodes) executes them. Unfortunately, in highly dynamic networks, this approach generates an overhead of control packet exchange between the ordinary nodes and the control plane, that …

SmartARP: merging IP and MAC addressing for low-cost gigabit Ethernet networks

1999

Abstract Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is one of the key TCP/IP stack protocols, used on LANs to map 32 bit IP addresses into 48 bit hardware addresses. Regular ARP uses MAC layer broadcasts to perform the mapping. In this paper a new server-based ARP extension (smartARP) is proposed, which allows the extension of ARP functionality beyond a single MAC layer broadcast domain. Compared to regular IP router, smartARP together with simple broadcast-filtering switches presents a low-cost alternative for forwarding packets between MAC layer broadcast domains. SmartARP is transparent to existing IP hosts, operates independent of LAN speed, and scales for big networks.

Properties and distribution of paired candidate stony meteorites at Meridiani Planum, Mars

2010

[1] The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity investigated four rocks, informally dubbed Barberton, Santa Catarina, Santorini, and Kasos, that are possible stony meteorites. Their chemical and mineralogical composition is similar to the howardite, eucrite, and diogenite group but with additional metal, similar to mesosiderite silicate clasts. Because of their virtually identical composition and because they appear to represent a relatively rare group of meteorites, they are probably paired. The four rocks were investigated serendipitously several kilometers apart, suggesting that Opportunity is driving across a larger population of similar rock fragments, maybe a meteorite strewn field. Small …

Firewall as a service in SDN OpenFlow network

2015

Protecting publicly available servers in internet today is a serious challenge, especially when encountering Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. In traditional internet, there is narrow scope of choices one can take when ingress traffic overloads physical connection limits. This paper proposes Firewall as a service in internet service providers (ISP) networks allowing end users to request and install match-action rules in ISPs edge routers. In proposed scenario, ISP runs Software Defined Networking environment where control plane is separated from data plane utilizing OpenFlow protocol and ONOS controller. For interaction between end-users and SDN Controller author defines an Appl…

Involvement of TLR4 in the long-term epigenetic changes, rewarding and anxiety effects induced by intermittent ethanol treatment in adolescence

2016

Studies in humans and experimental animals have demonstrated the vulnerability of the adolescent brain to actions of ethanol and the long-term consequences of binge drinking, including the behavioral and cognitive deficits that result from alcohol neurotoxicity, and increased risk to alcohol abuse and dependence. Although the mechanisms that participate in these effects are largely unknown, we have shown that ethanol by activating innate immune receptors, toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), induces neuroinflammation, impairs myelin proteins and causes cognitive dysfunctions in adolescent mice. Since neuroimmune signaling is also involved in alcohol abuse, the aim of this study was to assess whethe…

A MANET Autoconfiguration System based on Bluetooth Technology

2006

The availability of both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies on currently available devices offers the possibility to combine both in order to make the most out of their capabilities. In this paper we propose using Bluetooth technology to solve the configuration problem of the terminals conforming an IEEE 802.11-based ad-hoc network. The main objective of mobile ad- hoc networks (MANETs) is to extend the connectivity range of nodes through packet forwarding, thereby avoiding the use of a fixed infrastructure. However, since configuration of nodes is a complex issue, we provide a fast and reliable solution to auto-configure MANET terminals. Our solution is adequate for the quick setup and deplo…
