Attentional vs computational complexity measures in observing paintings
2009
Because of the great heterogeneity of subjects and styles, esthetic perception delineates a special and elusive field of research in vision, which represents an interesting challenge for cognitive science tools. With specific regard to the role of visual complexity, in this paper we present an experiment aimed to measure this dimension in a heterogeneous set of paintings. We compared perceived time complexity measures - based on a temporal estimation paradigm - with physical and statistical properties of the paintings, obtaining a strong correlation between psychological and computational results.
Speech Intelligibility Analysis and Approximation to Room Parameters through the Internet of Things
2021
In recent years, Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks (WASN) have been widely applied to different acoustic fields in outdoor and indoor environments. Most of these applications are oriented to locate or identify sources and measure specific features of the environment involved. In this paper, we study the application of a WASN for room acoustic measurements. To evaluate the acoustic characteristics, a set of Raspberry Pi 3 (RPi) has been used. One is used to play different acoustic signals and four are used to record at different points in the room simultaneously. The signals are sent wirelessly to a computer connected to a server, where using MATLAB we calculate both the impulse response (IR…

Executable Data Quality Models
2017
The paper discusses an external solution for data quality management in information systems. In contradiction to traditional data quality assurance methods, the proposed approach provides the usage of a domain specific language (DSL) for description data quality models. Data quality models consists of graphical diagrams, which elements contain requirements for data object's values and procedures for data object's analysis. The DSL interpreter makes the data quality model executable therefore ensuring measurement and improving of data quality. The described approach can be applied: (1) to check the completeness, accuracy and consistency of accumulated data; (2) to support data migration in c…
Experimental evaluation of privacy-preserving aggregation schemes on planetlab
2015
New pervasive technologies often reveal many sen- sitive information about users’ habits, seriously compromising the privacy and sometimes even the personal security of people. To cope with this problem, researchers have developed the idea of privacy-preserving data mining which refers to the possibility of releasing aggregate information about the data provided by multiple users, without any information leakage about individual data. These techniques have different privacy levels and communication costs, but all of them can suffer when some users’ data becomes inaccessible during the operation of the privacy preserving protocols. It is thus interesting to validate the applicability of such…
Optical system for automatic color monitoring in heterogeneous media during vinification processes
2019
Abstract Wine is one of the most important food products worldwide. However, the application of technologies to the winemaking process can improve. An RGBC optical sensor, used to measure color intensity and shade, was developed and tested in real environments. It is able to measure samples without filtering by offering the color intensity and shade of a filtered sample. Color intensity can be measured within the range of 1.5 and 9.5 color points with an approximate 3% error. The model for shade can be applied to red wines with an approximate 1% error. It can operate directly in cellars under real operating conditions. It avoids collecting samples, and filtering and measuring in a spectroph…
Diversity in random subspacing ensembles
2004
Ensembles of learnt models constitute one of the main current directions in machine learning and data mining. It was shown experimentally and theoretically that in order for an ensemble to be effective, it should consist of classifiers having diversity in their predictions. A number of ways are known to quantify diversity in ensembles, but little research has been done about their appropriateness. In this paper, we compare eight measures of the ensemble diversity with regard to their correlation with the accuracy improvement due to ensembles. We conduct experiments on 21 data sets from the UCI machine learning repository, comparing the correlations for random subspacing ensembles with diffe…
Realistic Implementation of the Particle Model for the Visualization of Nanoparticle Precipitation and Growth
2019
An application for visualizing the aggregation of structureless atoms is presented. The application allows us to demonstrate on a qualitative basis, as well as by quantitatively monitoring the aggregate surface/volume ratio, that the enhanced reactivity of nanoparticles can be connected with their large specific surface. It is suggested that, along with the use of geometric analogies, this bottom-up approach can be effective in discussing the enhanced reactivity proprieties of nanoparticles. The application is based on a two-dimensional realistic dynamic model where atoms move because of their thermal and interaction potential energies, and the trajectories are determined by solving numeric…

Recent studies on the economic dimensions of sports and physical activity in Germany have revealed that sport-related tourism is one of the important contributors to private household consumption. Due to a lack of representative and large-scale data sets, this topic has never been displayed in detail before. By using computer assisted telephone and web interviews, we collected a total data set of n=19,396 persons living in Germany. The expenditures for active sport tourism were isolated, which is understood as travelling to take part in different sporting activities. Data are provided on the overall spending of German households for sport trips, with skiing (€ 3.4 bn) and scuba diving (€ 2.…
