Optical Monitoring of Microplastics Filtrated from Wastewater Sludge and Suspended in Ethanol.

The abundance of microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere, on land, and especially in water bodies is well acknowledged. In this study, we establish an optical method based on three different techniques, namely, specular reflection to probe the medium, transmission spectroscopy measurements for the detection and identification, and a speckle pattern for monitoring the sedimentation of MPs filtrated from wastewater sludge and suspended in ethanol. We used first Raman measurements to estimate the presence and types of different MPs in wastewater sludge samples. We also used microscopy to identify the shapes of the main MPs. Complete genome sequence of the methanogenic neotype strain Methanobacterium formicicum MF(T.).

The neotype strain Methanobacterium formicicum MFT (DSM1535), a hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Archaeon, was isolated from a domestic sewage sludge digestor in Urbana (IL, USA). Here, the complete genome sequence of the methanogen is reported. The genome is 2,478,074 bp in size, featuring a GC content of 41.23%. M. formicicum MFT encodes several genes predicted to be involved in adaptation to abiotic stress such as high osmolarity. The strain MFT is of biotechnological importance since M. formicicum strains are often found in production-scale biogas plants and it is suggested as a starter culture for the anaerobic biomethanation process. Przedstawiono znaczenie, rozwój metod otrzymywania, kierunki zastosowania i perspektywy rozwoju poliolefin (polietylenu i polipropylenu), materiałów dominujących w światowej produkcji i zużyciu tworzyw sztucznych. Scharakteryzowano oddziaływania tych polimerów na środowisko, kolejno w etapie ich wytwarzania, wykorzystywania i utylizacji odpadów poużytkowych. Scharakteryzowano także kierunki badań prowadzonych w Instytucie Chemii Uniwersytetu Opolskiego w zakresie syntezy, charakterystyki, a przede wszystkim temo- i fotooksydacyjnej degradacji oraz starzenia atmosferycznego poliolefin.

Sorption capacities of the natural and synthetic zeolites for the Cu(II) ions

The sorption of Cu(II) ions onto natural (clinoptilolite) and synthetic (Na-X and Na-P1) zeolites was investigated. The synthetic zeolite samples were obtained from coal fly ash under hydrothermal crystallization conditions. The following issues were studied under batch conditions: the influence of the initial concentration of the Cu(II) ions, dose of zeolites, anion kind, and pH of solution. The experimental data were modelled with the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherms and their goodness-of-fit levels were compared.
