A review of the world's soil museums and exhibitions

The soil science community needs to communicate about soils and the use of soil information to various audiences, especially to the general public and public authorities. In this global review article, we synthesis information pertaining to museums solely dedicated to soils or which contain a permanent exhibition on soils. We identified 38 soil museums specifically dedicated to soils, 34 permanent soil exhibitions, and 32 collections about soils that are accessible by appointment. Phytoplankton Fluctuations during an Annual Cycle in the Coastal Lagoon of Cullera (Spain)

The seasonal variation and the vertical distribution of the phytoplanktonic population of the lagoon of Cullera, an elongated coastal lagoon with estuarine circulation of water, has been studied in three sampling stations: mouth, centre and source. Seasonal variation is determined by a marine-freshwater interaction. In winter, the sea influence is important, a marine water wedge of anoxic water arrives at the sampling station located at the source and marine and brackish water species dominate the phytoplankton. Aquatic biodiversity and saline lakes: Lake Bogoria National Reserve, Kenya

Lake Bogoria, in the Rift Valley of Kenya is an extreme saline lake (conductivity 40–80 mS cm-1, alkalinity 1500 m equ 1-1). It is hydrologically more stable than the other, endorheic lakes in Kenya, because it is deep — maximum depth at present just over 10 m in an area of 3000 ha — and so does not have periods when it is dry. It is ecologically simple, with only one species dominating the phytoplankton — the cyanobacterium ‘spirulina’, Arthrospira fusiformis. Its biomass and productivity were very high — biomass between 38 and 365 μg 1-1 chlorophyll ‘a’ and 3.4–21 x 103 coils ml-1 and net production between 0.24 and 1 gm C m3 h, the latter in a narrow zone of less than a metre. Evaluating the importance of Marine Protected Areas for the conservation of hawksbill turtles Eretmochelys imbricata nesting in the Dominican Republic

Understanding spatial and temporal habitat-use patterns to protect both foraging and breeding grounds of species of concern is crucial for successful conservation. Saona Island in Del Este National Park (DENP), south-eastern Dominican Republic (DR), hosts the only major hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) nesting area in the DR (100 nests yr �1 , SD = 8.4, range = 93�111), with the population having been critically reduced through hunting. The free-living planktonic freshwater bacterium Polynucleobacter necessarius subspecies asymbioticus (> 99% 16S rRNA similarity) represents a taxon with a cosmopolitan distribution and apparently ubiquitous occurrence in lentic freshwater habitats. Meromixis origin and recent trophic evolution in the Spanish mountain lake La Cruz

A sediment core from a Mediterranean karstic lake was studied through its pollen, diatom, chydorid, ostracod, charcoal and authigenic mineral composition. Information about environmental history recorded in the sediment sequence since the Middle Ages is presented. The main fluctuations of water volume and trophic status of the lake occurred during periods of great change in land management and during climatic cold phases. The synergetic effect of these two factors led to a high water level phase and triggered a rising of the trophic level which produced meromixis.
