Water Fluxes in Polymeric Membranes for Desalination via Membrane Distillation

Membrane distillation is an emerging technique for seawater desalination. Hydrophobic polymeric membranes are used to separate the solute‐free water vapour from the hot solution. Vapour fluxes of commercial polymeric membranes were measured in various conditions, i.e. natural and forced convection and vacuum. Vapour fluxes were also predicted with models and compared with experimentals. Higher fluxes were recorded in vacuum conditions.
FeOOH-modified clay sorbents for arsenic removal from aqueous solutions

The presence of arsenic (As) in natural and anthropogenic soils causes severe pollution of groundwater due to its harmful carcinogenic effects. The present work describes the research activities for searching of appropriate innovative sorbents based on clay material for As sorption using iron oxy-hydroxide modification. Natural and manufactured clay was chosen for comparison of modification efficiency in order to obtain best sorption results for As(V). Diagnosis of boron, fluorine, lead, nickel and zinc toxicity in citrus plantations in Villarreal, Spain

In the late 1980s, citrus plantations in the area of Villarreal (Spain) showed injuries similar to those previously reported for boron and fluorine toxicity. The area was affected by the disposal of industrial wastewater, mainly from ceramic industries. Conjunctive uses of surface water, groundwater and wastewater for irrigation had taken place. A survey was conducted at 25 orchards to assess leaves and soil for their boron, fluorine, lead, nickel and zinc contents. Wastewater and groundwater were also analyzed to corroborate the presence of these pollutants. Abstract Lead and cadmium levels in edible vegetables and antimony, lead and cadmium in drinking and raw waters from three agricultural areas exposed to different levels of environmental pollution (1-high industrial pollution, 2-high urban pollution, 3-standard low industrial and urban pollution) are determined. The organic matter is destroyed by repeated attack with nitric acid. Cadmium and lead are determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) and antimony by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS). Nitrous oxide emissions in a membrane bioreactor treating saline wastewater contaminated by hydrocarbons

The joint effect of wastewater salinity and hydrocarbons on nitrous oxide emission was investigated. The membrane bioreactor pilot plant was operated with two phases: i. biomass acclimation by increasing salinity from 10 gNaCl L−1 to 20 gNaCl L−1 (Phase I); ii. hydrocarbons dosing at 20 mg L−1 with a constant salt concentration of 20 gNaCl L−1 (Phase II). The Phase I revealed a relationship between nitrous oxide emissions and salinity. During the end of the Phase I, the activity of nitrifiers started to recover, indicating a partial acclimatization. The Effect of Interferences on the Uptake of Heavy Metals by Sodium (iron) Titanates from Waste Water

Sodium hexatitanate, sodium trititanate, sodium nonatitanate, and a new iron doped sodium nonatitanate were synthesized. Common interferences present in waste waters that hinder the removal of heavy metals by these ion exchangers were investigated. The presence of K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ at 0.001-0.05 M concentration had minor effect on the amount of Pb2+, Cr3+, and Ni2+ uptake. EDTA on the other hand, interferes tremendously with the metal uptake. Both in ternary and in single system, the selectivity series is in the order: Pb2+>Cr3+>Ni2+. This order changed to Cr3+>Pb2+>Ni2+, in the presence of 0.001-0.1 M EDTA at pH 5.
Sorption of uranium(VI) onto ferric oxides in sulfate-rich acid waters.

The mechanisms of the uranium(VI) sorption on schwertmannite and goethite in acid sulfate-rich solutions were studied by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The samples were prepared under N2 atmosphere and initial uranium(VI) concentrations of 1 x 10(-5) (pH 6.5) to 5 x 10(-5) M (pH 4.2). The ionic strength was adjusted using 0.01 M Na2SO4 or 0.01 M NaClO4, respectively. The EXAFS structural parameters for uranium(VI) sorbed on goethite in sulfate-rich, acid and near-neutral solutions indicate that uranium(VI) forms an inner-sphere, mononuclear, bidentate surface complex. In this work we present a thorough investigation of the hydration dependence of myoglobin dynamics. The study is performed on D2O-hydrated protein powders in the hydration range 0<h<0.5 (h≡gr[D2O]/gr[protein]) and in the temperature range 20-300K. The protein equilibrium fluctuations are investigated with Elastic Neutron Scattering using the spectrometer IN13 at ILL (Grenoble), while the relaxations of the protein + hydration water system are investigated with Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy; finally, Differential Scanning Calorimetry is used to obtain a thermodynamic description of the system. Electrostatic phenomena in ion exchange membranes

Abstract Specific and transport properties of a cation and an anion exchange membrane in Na + and Cl - form respectively have been measured in water and dioxane water mixtures. A greater electrolyte absorption and a lesser specific conductivity and counterion transport number in solvents at higher dioxane content indicate strong electrostatic interactions between fixed groups in the membrane and counterions.
