Interchannel Interference and Mitigation in Distributed MIMO RF Sensing

2021

In this paper, we analyze and mitigate the cross-channel interference, which is found in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radio frequency (RF) sensing systems. For a millimeter wave (mm-Wave) MIMO system, we present a geometrical three-dimensional (3D) channel model to simulate the time-variant (TV) trajectories of a moving scatterer. We collected RF data using a state-of-the-art radar known as Ancortek SDR-KIT 2400T2R4, which is a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) MIMO radar system operating in the K-band. The Ancortek radar is currently the only K-band MIMO commercial radar system that offers customized antenna configurations. It is shown that this radar system encounters th…

A Non-Stationary Channel Model for the Development of Non-Wearable Radio Fall Detection Systems

2018

The emerging non-wearable fall detection systems rely on processing radio waves reflected off the body of the home user who has no active interaction with the system, increasing the user privacy and acceptability. This paper proposes a nonstationary channel model that is important for the development of such systems. A three-dimensional stochastic trajectory model is designed to capture targeted mobility patterns of the home user. The model is featured with a forward fall mechanism, which is actuated at a random point along the path. A transmitter emits radio waves throughout an indoor propagation environment, while a receiver collects fingerprints of the scattering objects on the emitted w…

The scientific payload on-board the HERMES-TP and HERMES-SP CubeSat missions

2021

HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Technological and Scientific pathfinder is a space borne mission based on a LEO constellation of nano-satellites. The 3U CubeSat buses host new miniaturized detectors to probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Fast transient localization, in a field of view of several steradians and with arcmin-level accuracy, is gained by comparing time delays among the same event detection epochs occurred on at least 3 nano-satellites. With a launch date in 2022, HERMES transient monitoring represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. In t…

Enhancing HSUPA system level performance with dual carrier capability

2010

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how dual carrier capability can enhance High Speed Uplink Packet Access performance in comparison to using only single carrier. Dual carrier operation gives the User Equipment the possibility to transmit simultaneously using two 5 MHz bands, theoretically doubling the peak data rates and user throughput. The analysis is conducted with a system level simulation tool. This paper first indicates with single carrier simulations that, especially in small cells, terminals have spare power available for dual carrier operation. These observations are verified with dual carrier simulations by showing that the burst throughput can be practically doubled. In the…

A Wavelet approach to extract main features from indirect immunofluorescence images

2019

A number of previous studies have shown that IIF image analysis requires complex and sometimes heterogeneous and diversified methods. Robust solutions can be proposed but they need to orchestrate several methods from low-level analysis up to more complex neural networks or SVM for data classification. The contribution intends to highlight the versatility of Wavelet Transform (WT) and their use in various levels of analysis for the classification of IIF images in order to develop a system capable of performing: image enhancement, ROI segmentation and object classification. Therefore, WT was adopted in the de-noise section, segmentation and classification. This analysis allows frequencies cha…

Discrimination of physiological tremor from pathological tremor using accelerometer and surface EMG signals.

2020

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although careful clinical examination and medical history are the most important steps towards a diagnostic separation between different tremors, the electro-physiological analysis of the tremor using accelerometry and electromyography (EMG) of the affected limbs are promising tools. METHODS: A soft-decision wavelet-based decomposition technique is applied with 8 decomposition stages to estimate the power spectral density of accelerometer and surface EMG signals (sEMG) sampled at 800 Hz. A discrimination factor between physiological tremor (PH) and pathological tremor, namely, essential tremor (ET) and the tremor caused by Parkinson’s disease (PD), is obtained by s…

POLARIZATION-BASED CAR DETECTION

2018

International audience; Road scene understanding is a vital task for driving assistance systems. Robust vehicle detection is a precondition for diverse applications particularly for obstacle avoidance and secure navigation. Color images provide limited information about the physical properties of the object. This results in unstable vehicle detection caused mainly from road scene complexity (strong reflexions, noises and radiometric distortions). Instead, polarimetric images, characteristic of the light wave, can robustly describe important physical properties of the object (e.g., the surface geometric structure, material and roughness etc). This modality gives rich physical informations wh…

The Impact of Human Walking on the Time-Frequency Distribution of In-Home Radio Channels

2018

Passive activity recognition of home occupants has become a very hot topic in the area of radio communications, as it enables the development of cutting-edge healthcare monitoring solutions. Thanks to ubiquitous radio waves, such as WiFi signals, at today's homes, one can process radio waves reflected off a person's body for identifying certain mobility patterns. This new approach ignores the need for any wearable sensors. This paper reports a challenging indoor radio channel measurement campaign at 5.9 GHz, which has been conducted to study the impact of walking persons on the temporal and spectral properties of the channel. In particular, the time-frequency distribution of the channel has…

Selective Harmonic Elimination in a 5-Level Single Phase Converter with FPGA Based Controller

2018

Multilevel converters are becoming popular in high-power applications such as motor drives, renewable energy systems and distribution systems. Among all modulation techniques, selective harmonic elimination methods offer high quality voltage waveforms with operations at low switching frequency, hence, they are especially suitable for high-power applications. In this paper, a new analytical expression for the SHE problem formulated for a five-level converter is introduced, which is able to calculate the exact value of the switching angles. After a mathematical description of the proposed approach, this manuscript reports simulation and experimental results and analysis showing achievable res…

Enhancing the Resolution of the Spectrogram of Non-Stationary Mobile Radio Channels by Using Massive MIMO Techniques

2017

This paper is concerned with the enhancement of the resolution of the spectrogram of non-stationary mobile radio channels using massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. By starting from a new generic geometrical model for a non-stationary MIMO channel, we derive the complex MIMO channel gains under the assumption that the mobile station (MS) moves with time-variant speed. Closed-form solutions are derived for the spectrogram of the complex MIMO channel gains by using a Gaussian window. It is shown that the window spread can be optimized subject to the MS's speed change. Furthermore, it is shown that the spectrogram can be split into an auto-term and a cross-term. The auto-t…
