Regular and singular pulse and front solutions and possible isochronous behavior in the Extended-Reduced Ostrovsky Equation: Phase-plane, multi-infin…

2016

In this paper we employ three recent analytical approaches to investigate several classes of traveling wave solutions of the so-called extended-reduced Ostrovsky Equation (exROE). A recent extension of phase-plane analysis is first employed to show the existence of breaking kink wave solutions and smooth periodic wave (compacton) solutions. Next, smooth traveling waves are derived using a recent technique to derive convergent multi-infinite series solutions for the homoclinic orbits of the traveling-wave equations for the exROE equation. These correspond to pulse solutions respectively of the original PDEs. We perform many numerical tests in different parameter regime to pinpoint real saddl…

Resonance of minimizers forn-level quantum systems with an arbitrary cost

2004

We consider an optimal control problem describing a laser-induced population transfer on a n-level quantum system. For a convex cost depending only on the moduli of controls ( i.e. the lasers intensities), we prove that there always exists a minimizer in resonance. This permits to justify some strategies used in experimental physics. It is also quite important because it permits to reduce remarkably the complexity of the problem (and extend some of our previous results for n=2 and n=3): instead of looking for minimizers on the sphere one is reduced to look just for minimizers on the sphere . Moreover, for the reduced problem, we investigate on the question of existence of strict abnormal mi…

Hilbert-Huang versus Morlet wavelet transformation on mismatch negativity of children in uninterrupted sound paradigm

2008

Background Compared to the waveform or spectrum analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs), time-frequency representation (TFR) has the advantage of revealing the ERPs time and frequency domain information simultaneously. As the human brain could be modeled as a complicated nonlinear system, it is interesting from the view of psychological knowledge to study the performance of the nonlinear and linear time-frequency representation methods for ERP research. In this study Hilbert-Huang transformation (HHT) and Morlet wavelet transformation (MWT) were performed on mismatch negativity (MMN) of children. Participants were 102 children aged 8–16 years. MMN was elicited in a passive oddball parad…

Numerical approach to the exact controllability of hyperbolic systems

2005

In this paper we present the numerical implementation of H.U.M. (Hilbert Uniqueness Method, J.L.Lions[1]). We restrict ourselves to the exact boundary controllability of the wave equation, with Dirichlet controls, but the numerical method presented here can be applied to other kinds of controllability. The problem is discretized by a finite elements of first order in space and by a discrete time Galerkin approximation (Dupont [1]). The efficiency of the method is illustrated by numerical results.

Time-harmonic solution for acousto-elastic interaction with controllability and spectral elements

2010

The classical way of solving the time-harmonic linear acousto-elastic wave problem is to discretize the equations with finite elements or finite differences. This approach leads to large-scale indefinite complex-valued linear systems. For these kinds of systems, it is difficult to construct efficient iterative solution methods. That is why we use an alternative approach and solve the time-harmonic problem by controlling the solution of the corresponding time dependent wave equation. In this paper, we use an unsymmetric formulation, where fluid-structure interaction is modeled as a coupling between pressure and displacement. The coupled problem is discretized in space domain with spectral el…

Observed changes in the life time and amplitude of the madden-julian oscillation associated with interannual ENSO sea surface temperature anomalies

2007

Abstract The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is analyzed using the reanalysis zonal wind– and satellite outgoing longwave radiation–based indices of Wheeler and Hendon for the 1974–2005 period. The average lifetime of the MJO events varies with season (36 days for events whose central date occurs in December, and 48 days for events in September). The lifetime of the MJO in the equinoctial seasons (March–May and October–December) is also dependent on the state of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). During October–December it is only 32 days under El Niño conditions, increasing to 48 days under La Niña conditions, with similar values in northern spring. This difference is due to faster eastw…

Quantitative View on the Processes Governing the Upscale Error Growth up to the Planetary Scale Using a Stochastic Convection Scheme

2019

Abstract Two diagnostics based on potential vorticity and the envelope of Rossby waves are used to investigate upscale error growth from a dynamical perspective. The diagnostics are applied to several cases of global, real-case ensemble simulations, in which the only difference between the ensemble members lies in the random seed of the stochastic convection scheme. Based on a tendency equation for the enstrophy error, the relative importance of individual processes to enstrophy-error growth near the tropopause is quantified. After the enstrophy error is saturated on the synoptic scale, the envelope diagnostic is used to investigate error growth up to the planetary scale. The diagnostics re…

Tropical–extratropical interactions related to upper-level troughs at low latitudes

2007

Abstract Momentum and kinetic energy fluxes associated with low-latitude transient disturbances at upper-levels play an important role in the general circulation of the atmosphere. They are related to eastward and equatorward propagating, positively tilted wave trains from the extratropics. Theoretical, modelling and observational studies show that this particular kind of tropical–extratropical interaction is most common in regions of mean upper-level westerlies at low latitudes, i.e. over the central and eastern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans during boreal winter and spring. The penetration of an upper-level trough into the Tropics is often associated with enhanced convection and the formatio…

A three-dimensional study of the onset of convection in a horizontal, rectangular porous channel heated from below

2012

Author's version of an article published in the journal: International Journal of Thermal Sciences. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijthermalsci.2011.12.012 The onset of convection is studied in a rectangular channel filled with a fluid saturated porous medium, bounded above and below by impermeable isothermal walls at unequal temperatures and laterally by partially conducting walls. A three-dimensional linear stability analysis is carried out under the assumption of an infinite longitudinal channel length. Then, this assumption is relaxed in order to determine the threshold length for the three-dimensional convection to be the preferred mode at onset. Sens…

Geoid effects in a convecting system with lateral viscosity variations

1992

The geoid signal and the flow patterns of two-dimensional steady state convection models with exponential temperature- and depth dependent viscosity are compared with results for an equivalent stratified viscosity structure. In analogy to Richards and Hager [1989], the latter are computed by a “dynamic response” approach. The flow fields obtained with this approach are quite different from the full solution; the geoid signals are similar but the amplitudes differ significantly. The differences are analysed in the horizontal wavenumber domain and in the spatial domain. They may lead to an overestimation of the viscosity contrast of the earth's mantle derived by modeling the earth's geoid wit…
