On-chip periodic arrays of optical traps based on the superposition of guided modes in silicon waveguides
2019
Since the pioneering work of Kawata and Tani [1], photonic waveguides have long been regarded as efficient optical conveyor belts for potential lab-on-a-chip applications. Indeed, near-field optical forces arising at the surface of such waveguides lead to efficient on-chip guided propulsion of micro- and even nanoparticles [2], as well as cells and bacteria in liquid solutions [3]. However, achieving stable and precisely controlled optical trapping of particles at the surface of a waveguide has been made possible only recently, and even then, it still requires complex photonic electro-optic tools to produce and handle on-chip standing waves [4].
10 Gb/s transmission and thermo-optic resonance tuning in silicon-plasmonic waveguide platform
2011
The first system-level experimental results of hybrid Si-DLSPP structures incorporated into a SOI chip are reported. We demonstrate over 7nm thermo-optical tuning of a Si-Plasmonic racetrack-resonator and verify error-free 10Gb/s transmission through 60um Si-Plasmonic waveguide.
Supercontinuum generation in silicon waveguides based on optical wave-breaking
2014
We theoretically find the third order dispersion that optimizes the spectral broadening induced by optical wave-breaking. It produces supercontinuum spectra spanning beyond 2=3 of an octave in a silicon waveguide pumping at 1550 nm.
Femtosecond exciton dynamics in WSe2 optical waveguides
2020
Van-der Waals (vdW) atomically layered crystals can act as optical waveguides over a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum ranging from Terahertz to visible. Unlike common Si-based waveguides, vdW semiconductors host strong excitonic resonances that may be controlled using non-thermal stimuli including electrostatic gating and photoexcitation. Here, we utilize waveguide modes to examine photo-induced changes of excitons in the prototypical vdW semiconductor, WSe2, prompted by femtosecond light pulses. Using time-resolved scanning near-field optical microscopy we visualize the electric field profiles of waveguide modes in real space and time and extract the temporal evolution of the op…
Thermo-optic control of dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide components
2010
International audience; We report preliminary results on the development of compact (length 20%) is demonstrated with MZI-and WRR-based components, and efficient (similar to 30%) rerouting is achieved with DC switches. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America
CMOS plasmonics in WDM data transmission: 200 Gb/s (8 × 25Gb/s) transmission over aluminum plasmonic waveguides
2018
We demonstrate wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) 200 Gb/s (8 × 25 Gb/s) data transmission over 100 μm long aluminum (Al) surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waveguides on a Si3N4 waveguide platform at telecom wavelengths. The Al SPP waveguide was evaluated in terms of signal integrity by performing bit-error-rate (BER) measurements that revealed error-free operation for all eight 25 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulated data channels with power penalties not exceeding 0.2 dB at 10−9. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of WDM enabled data transmission over complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) SPP waveguides fueling future development of CMOS compatible …
Exploring 10 Gb/s transmissions in Titanium dioxide based waveguides at 1.55 pm and 2.0 pm
2017
Exploring new spectral bands for optical transmission is one of the solutions to support the increasingly demand of data traffic. The recent development of dedicated hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers [1], associated to the emergence of thulium doped fiber amplifiers [2] has recently focused the attention further in the infrared, and more specifically around 2 μm. Regarding integrated photonics, it becomes therefore interesting to find a suitable platform to operate at 2 μm as well as in the other more conventional spectral bands (going from 800 nm to 1550 nm). Here, we propose titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) as a good candidate for integrated waveguide photonics and demonstrate, for the first t…
Polymer based tuneable photonic crystals
2007
We report on the fabrication and characterization of photonic crystal slab waveguide resonators which contain a nanostructured second-order nonlinear optical polymer. The combination of a photonic crystal resonator realized in a second-order nonlinear optical polymer allowed the detection of electro-optical modulation of light with a sub-1-V sensitivity. Furthermore we report on the synthesis of novel nonlinear optical polymers with large second-order hyperpolarizability and improved glass transition temperature. The polymer slab waveguide is micro patterned by means of electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. The photonic crystal slab-based resonator consisted of a square lattic…
Two-dimensional photonic-crystal microwave waveguide
2003
This paper reports on the use of 2D photonic crystals to design microwave waveguides. The waveguide consists of a periodic arrangement of holes, with a square or rectangular cross section, that extends along the waveguide with a central defect defined by the absence of a hole. The theoretical analysis of such a structure is based on a biorthogonal-basis method and provides a full-vector description of the modes guided by the defect. Our results show that such a waveguide can be designed to support only one mode at any operating frequency. This mode is a polarization doublet whose dispersion is controlled by the geometrical parameters, thus permitting the design of a novel polarization-maint…
