Efficient analysis of cubic junction of rectangular waveguides using admittance-matrix representation

In the paper an efficient and accurate method, based on the multimode-admittance-matrix representation and the theory of cavities, is proposed for the analysis of a six-port ‘cubic’ junction composed of the orthogonal intersection of three rectangular waveguides. Very simple closed-form analytical expressions are explicitly detailed for all matrix elements of this basic key building block. More general waveguide multiport junctions, composed of a central cubic junction with arbitrarily shaped waveguide access ports, are also studied using a segmentation procedure. A protocol for explicitly constructing the exact time-evolution operators generated by 2×2 time-dependent PT-symmetry Hamiltonians is reported. Its mathematical applicability is illustrated with the help of appropriate examples. The physical relevance of the proposed approach within gain-loss system scenarios, like two coupled waveguides, is discussed in detail.

We present the design, fabrication and characterization of long-range surface plasmon polariton waveguide arrays with materials, mainly silicones, carefully selected with the aim to be used as mechanically flexible single-mode optical interconnections, the so-called “plasmonic arc” working at 1.55µm. The fabricated plasmonic arcs show a TM/TE polarization ratio of ~25 dB. By using the cut-back method, the straight propagation loss at 1.55µm is estimated to 0.5-1 dB/mm and coupling loss to ~1-2 dB/facet after dicing. Computer-aided design of substrate integrated waveguide filters for microwave and millimeter-wave applications

In this paper, a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tool of Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) filters for high frequency applications is described. Some synthesis techniques are successfully combined with a fast and accurate full-wave analysis method, thus designing several practical examples of in-line and cross-coupled SIW filters. Prototypes have been manufactured and measured showing good results for different filter topologies. A novel zigzag coupling scheme is proposed for SIW compact filters in order to achieve very restrictive specifications of ultra-wideband (UWB) systems.

Frequency conversion of propagating surface plasmon polaritons by organic molecules

We demonstrate frequency conversion of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) by utilizing the coupling between organic dye molecules and SPP. Launching of SPPs into a plasmonic waveguide is done in two ways: by optically excited molecules and by quantum dots (QDs). QDs are demonstrated to overcome the major problem of bleaching occurring with molecules. The SPP propagates tens of micrometers and clear frequency conversion is observed in the SPP spectrum after passing an area of converter molecules. The use of molecules and QDs as elements of all-plasmonic devices has the potential for high integration and use of self-assembly in fabrication. Peer reviewed

Conditions for waveguide decoupling in square-lattice photonic crystals

We study coupling and decoupling of parallel waveguides in two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystals. We show that the waveguide coupling is prohibited at some wavelengths when there is an odd number of rows between the waveguides. In contrast, decoupling does not take place when there is even number of rows between the waveguides. Decoupling can be used to avoid cross talk between adjacent waveguides.

Coupling evanescently low loss Silicon-on-insulator ridge waveguides including high Q nanocavities for light control

In this work, we propose an innovative way to achieve an air-slotted nanocavities by coupling evanescently low loss Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) ridge waveguides(WGs) including high Q nanocavities exhibiting an ultrasmall modal volume V. We first show that coupling two WGs allows us to achieve a field confinement within the air slot as low as lambda/30 while preserving a high group index of the guided modes. Then we demonstrate that merging such coupled WGs with state-of-the-art high-Q/small V nanocavities is a robust way to achieve a single compact (1 µm × 3 µm) air-slotted resonator on substrate. Purcell-enhancement of the radiative PL decay in perylenediimides by coupling with silver nanoparticles into waveguide modes

In this work, an interesting approach to enhance the coupling between excitons and plasmons is proposed by integrating highly luminescent perylenediimides (PDIs) and Ag metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the core of a multilayer dielectric waveguide. The combination of the weak plasmonic coupling and the high scattering of MNPs gives rise to a significant improvement of the PDI photoluminescence and Purcell factor (PF) in forward-scattering geometry. SNOM study of ferroelectric domains in doped LiNbO3 crystals

Abstract This work shows a study of the periodic ferroelectric domains formed in LiNbO3 crystals doped with rare earths by means of scanning near field optical microscopy (SNOM) technique. It has been observed periodic structures associated with ferroelectric domains with an unexpected high value of the optical contrast working under reflectance SNOM mode. From Raman-Nath diffraction patterns, a refractive index modulation of Δ n ∼ 1 0 − 4 has been calculated. These results were correlated with the ferroelectric periodic domains obtained by the SNOM technique.
