Accurate modal characterization of optical fibers using acousto-optics

2016

In-fiber acousto-optics enable accurate and broadband characterization of two mode optical fibers. Differential effective index, group index and dispersion are reported for two-mode optical fibers. Small phase differences between the quasi-degenerated vector modes comprising the LP 11 mode are also measured. In addition, a fine analysis of fiber axial non-uniformities can be performed using a time-resolved acousto-optic technique. In this case, sub-ppm changes of effective index are measured with few cm resolution along fiber sections of about 2 m.

On the Intrinsic Population of the Lowest Triplet State of Thymine

2007

The population of the lowest triplet state of thymine after near-UV irradiation has been established, on the basis of CASPT2//CASSCF quantum chemical calculations, to take place via three distinct intersystem crossing mechanisms from the initially populated singlet bright 1pipi* state. Two singlet-triplet crossings have been found along the minimum-energy path for ultrafast decay of the singlet state at 4.8 and 4.0 eV, involving the lowest 3npi* and 3pipi* states, respectively. Large spin-orbit coupling elements predict efficient intersystem crossing processes in both cases. Another mechanism involving energy transfer from the lowest 1npi* state with much larger spin-orbit coupling terms ca…

Multicore optical fibres for astrophotonics

2011

We report progress towards multimode (MM) fibre filters for suppressing the OH emission that hinders ground-based observation of the early Universe. Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) can filter these narrow spectral lines in single-mode (SM) fibres [1]. Implementing them in MM fibres well-matched to astronomical instruments requires transitions between the MM fibre and several SM fibres [2]. Such hand-crafted “photonic lanterns” require many identical FBGs to be made and spliced in place. Instead we are pursuing the idea in multicore (MC) fibres, Fig. 1(a). The FBG is written at once in all the SM cores. The fibre is jacketed with low-index glass and tapered to form the core and cladding of a MM …

Optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals

2007

International audience; We report a complete optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals. We studied the relative orientation between the dielectric and the crystallographic frames as a function of the wavelength and performed accurate phase-matching angles measurements for second harmonic generation, using a single crystal cut as a sphere. We also recorded polarized luminescence spectra of Nd:YCOB along the principal axes of the dielectric frame. For both crystals, we measured the gray-tracking and the thermo-optic properties as a function of temperature and wavelength using oriented slabs. Finally, we measured all their dielectric and electro-optic coefficients, as…

Numerical study of the long wavelength limit of the Toda lattice

2014

We present the first detailed numerical study of the Toda equations in $2+1$ dimensions in the limit of long wavelengths, both for the hyperbolic and elliptic case. We first study the formal dispersionless limit of the Toda equations and solve initial value problems for the resulting system up to the point of gradient catastrophe. It is shown that the break-up of the solution in the hyperbolic case is similar to the shock formation in the Hopf equation, a $1+1$ dimensional singularity. In the elliptic case, it is found that the break-up is given by a cusp as for the semiclassical system of the focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in $1+1$ dimensions. The full Toda system is then studie…

Wavelength tuning of femtosecond pulses generated in nonlinear crystals by using diffractive lenses

2010

We demonstrate that diffractive lenses (DLs) can be used as a simple method to tune the central wavelength of femtosecond pulses generated from second-order nonlinear optical processes in birefringent crystals. The wavelength tunability is achieved by changing the relative distance between the nonlinear crystal and the DL, which acts in a focusing configuration. Besides the many practical applications of the so-generated pulses, the proposed method might be extended to other wavelength ranges by demonstrated similar effects on other nonlinear processes, such as high-order harmonic generation.

Supercontinuum optimization for dual-soliton based light sources using genetic algorithms in a grid platform

2014

We present a numerical strategy to design fiber based dual pulse light sources exhibiting two predefined spectral peaks in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime. The frequency conversion is based on the soliton fission and soliton self-frequency shift occurring during super- continuum generation. The optimization process is carried out by a genetic algorithm that provides the optimum input pulse parameters: wavelength, temporal width and peak power. This algorithm is implemented in a Grid platform in order to take advantage of distributed computing. These results are useful for optical coherence tomography applications where bell-shaped pulses located in the second near-infrared wi…

Design of All-Normal Dispersion Microstructured Optical Fiber on Silica Platform for Generation of Pulse-Preserving Supercontinuum Under Excitation a…

2017

We investigated numerically the possibility of all normal dispersion fiber design for near-infrared supercontinuum generation based on a standard air-silica microstructure. The design procedure includes finding of target dispersion profile and subsequent finding of appropriate geometrical fiber design by inverse dispersion engineering. It was shown that the tailoring of dispersion profile could increase the spectral width of generated supercontinuum while maintaining perfect spectral flatness. Conditions necessary for wide and flat supercontinuum generation as well as restrictions imposed by chosen materials were discussed. As a result of design and optimization procedure, an air-silica des…

Electric field manipulation in Al/CdTe/Pt detectors under optical perturbations

2017

Abstract Al/CdTe/Pt detectors are very attractive devices for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, even though they suffer from polarization phenomena, which cause a progressive time degradation of the spectroscopic performance. In this work we investigated on the time dependence of the electric field of an Al/CdTe/Pt detector under optical perturbation by means of Pockels effect measurements. A tunable laser with wavelengths ranging within 700−1000 nm and a 940 nm light emitting diode (LED) were used. The measurements of both the electric field profile and the total current were used to better understand the effects of the optical perturbation on polarization phenomena. The results point ou…
