Four aspects of politics in Max Weber’s Politik als Beruf

2019

The article offers a rereading of Weber’s Politik als Beruf as a conceptualisation of politics contingent and controversial activity in terms of the four aspects of politics: politicisation, polity, politicking and policy. Weber discusses politics as a concept abstracted from its content. All four aspects can be found in his exposition of the concept. Weber mentions first policy as the direction of politics and demarcates his focus on the state-type polities. Then, he presents the formula on politics as striving for power, consisting of chances to politicise its distinct shares, and discusses historical types of professional politicians and their styles of politicking. Weber illustrates th…

What do users associate with ‘interactivity’?

2009

‘Interactivity’ was one of the major buzzwords of the 1990s. Although the academic discourse has produced a large number of different concepts of ‘interactivity’, in everyday life it still remains a label put on all kinds of aspects of online communication and digital media. Drawing on schema theory this article explores the concepts of ‘ordinary’ users (i.e. people who are not professional experts). The results indicate that users associate the foremost social and individual issues with the term ‘interactivity’, i.e. what they can accomplish by using media in terms of self-development, social influence and social relationships.

The interplay between media-for-monitoring and media-for-searching: How news media trigger searches and edits in Wikipedia

2016

This study investigates how traditional news media and Internet services have become entangled in recipients’ habits of gathering information on current topics. Push media enable citizens to scan the issue environment while pull media enable them to seek out in-depth information if information needs have been elicited. Furthermore, content quality in many pull media may increase when more users generate content, removing flaws and adding information. We expected that TV and newspaper coverage of an issue will lead to increases in (a) searches for and (b) user edits in related articles in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Our findings reliably support the hypotheses, but the extent to whic…

Tīmekļa lietotņu servera puses loģikas izstrāde SIA "Dynatech" vajadzībām

2018

Integration of Spatial processing and knowledge Processing through the Semantic Web Stack

2011

International audience; This paper presents the integration process of spatial technologies and Semantic Web technologies and its associated tool. The result of this work is a spatial query and rule engine of spatial. To do so, existing ontology with spatial elements is adjusted in order to process the spatial knowledge through spatial technologies. This paper outlines the methods and the processes of these adjustments and how results are returned by our tool. The SWRL and the SPARQL language are extended for spatial purpose and the existing OWL ontology wine is used as an application example.

Involvement and image transfer in sports sponsorship

2017

Sponsorships have become one of the most important marketing tools. Data show that a majority of sporting events is sponsored and that investment in sponsorship is increasing every year. Companies are demanding more research to better unde rstand their investment efficacy. Involvement is a key element in processing sponsorship information in consumers’ minds. This variable affects consumer behavior and moderates the sponsor image transfer. The study of involvement could give guidance for the design of appropriate and functional advert ising campaigns. The research proposes segmenting and modelling sport consumer behaviour in sponsorship by their level of involvement with the event. For this…

Building Digital Government by XML

2005

Continuing innovations in information and communication technologies offer powerful tools for building digital government but, at the same time, in many environments they have lead into a number of heterogeneous, expensive, and inconsistent solutions. XML offers a common metalanguage and terminology to develop means for system and data integration, and for gradual transfer to more consistent formats in information assets. The paper describes ways for the use of XML in public administration and gives examples of the use, particularly, in Finland. The paper introduces XML standardization levels and types in public administration. Experiences of the long-term standardization of the Finnish par…

Technology standard diffusion and negative network externalities: a lesson from the third Browser War

2009

This paper presents a new model for technology standard diffusion that highlights the importance of negative network externalities in some fields of technology product such as web browsers. Again, as often happened in this research field, motivation and suggestion for such a research has been acquired from the evolution of the web browser war. So, in the paper, the main literature concerning standard diffusion has been reviewed in conjunction with web browser evolution, and the necessity of a new development of technology standard diffusion models is highlighted and supported by empirical evidences.

Requirement analysis abstractions for AmI system design

2015

Current trends in the AI’s evolution are going towards enriching environments with intelligence in order to support humans in their everyday life. AmI systems are plunged in the real world and humans expect to interact with them in a way that is similar to the one they have with other humans. In this kind of systems, where eliciting requirements involves several documents and stakeholders (mainly users that will be the first consumers of the system), the requirement analysis phase can be affected by incomplete, ambiguous and imprecise information. Hence, the need to find a fruitful way for knowledge management and its representation at design time. In this paper we propose a set of abstract…

A model-based approach to Spotify data analysis: a Beta GLMM

2020

Digital music distribution is increasingly powered by automated mechanisms that continuously capture, sort and analyze large amounts of Web-based data. This paper deals with the management of songs audio features from a statistical point of view. In particular, it explores the data catching mechanisms enabled by Spotify Web API and suggests statistical tools for the analysis of these data. Special attention is devoted to songs popularity and a Beta model, including random effects, is proposed in order to give the first answer to questions like: which are the determinants of popularity? The identification of a model able to describe this relationship, the determination within the set of char…
