Semantic models of musical mood: Comparison between crowd-sourced and curated editorial tags
2013
Social media services such as Last.fm provide crowd-sourced mood tags which are a rich but often noisy source of information. In contrast, editorial annotations from production music libraries are meant to be incisive in nature. We compare the efficiency of these two data sources in capturing semantic information on mood expressed by music. First, a semantic computing technique devised for mood-related tags in large datasets is applied to Last.fm and I Like Music (ILM) corpora separately (250,000 tracks each). The resulting semantic estimates are then correlated with listener ratings of arousal, valence and tension. High correlations (Spearman's rho) are found between the track positions in…
Milestones of complex computing facility assembling
2015
IMCS UL continues its enduring development of research e-infrastructure, participates in international projects such as GEANT, GN2, GN3, GN3+, GN4, BalticGRID, BG II and EGI-InSPIRE, has involved in CLARIN and ELIXIR ESFRI ERIC activities. Currently IMCS UL maintains Scientific Cloud unified computing facility realized as ½ PTB SAN storage (IBM DS4700 with servers); provides collocation, hosting and virtualization services. As well it operates as a node for online correlation data streaming services from Irbene radio telescope in real time, HPC resources' disposal for computing tasks, usage of Big data extracted from data storage for modeling and also for graphic data processing. In the sam…
OWL2: The Next Step for OWL
2008
Since achieving W3C recommendation status in 2004, the Web Ontology Language (OWL) has been successfully applied to many problems in computer science. Practical experience with OWL has been quite positive in general; however, it has also revealed room for improvement in several areas. We systematically analyze the identied short-comings of OWL, such as expressivity issues, problems with its syntaxes, and deficiencies in the definition of OWL species. Furthermore, we present an overview of OWL 2 -- an extension to and revision of OWL that is currently being developed within the W3C OWL Working Group. Many aspects of OWL have been thoroughly reengineered in OWL 2, thus producing a robust plat…
Measuring Effort in Subprocesses of Subtitling
2021
There has been noticeable growth in the use and production of intralingual and interlingual subtitles due to technological advances and accessibility legislation. While the reception of subtitles has been increasingly studied over the years, there are only a few empirical studies that investigate the process of subtitling. This contribution gives initial results from a study that investigates the impact of reference material during post-editing of NMT of audiovisual content via language. The focus is on transcription and translation processes, the two main subprocesses of the complex task of interlingual subtitling. Applying well-established methods from TPR, key-logging and eye tracking, t…
Web Services Specific Security Standards
2014
Abstract In this paper are described the aspects regarding the security within OGSA framework, introducing WS-Security standard – OASIS standard for Web Services security. There are approached the security aspects of the OGSA environment for the delivered architectures P2P – ‘Peer-to-Peer’ and there are presented the recent initiatives for creating a specific and adapted environment OGSA for the applications P2P and the specific security demands of these transactions. Furthermore, there are exposed aspects regarding the mobility of services and resources in the P2P context, with the conditions of applying WSRF framework, derived from OGSA to the P2P environments, SOA processes in P2P enviro…
Towards MKDA: A Knowledge Discovery Assistant for Researches in Medicine
2007
Nowadays doctors are generating a huge amount of raw data. These data, analyzed with data mining techniques, could be sources of new knowledge. Unluckily such tasks need skilled data analysts, and not so much researchers in Medicine are also data mining experts. In this paper we present a web based system for knowledge discovery assistance in Medicine able to advice a medical researcher in this kind of tasks. The user must define only the experiment specifications in a formal language we have defined. The system GUI helps users in their composition. Then the system plans a Knowledge Discovery Process (KDP) on the basis of rules in a knowledge base. Finally the system executes the KDP and pr…
The pragmatics of political messages in twitter communication
2012
The aim of the current paper is to formulate a conception of pragmatic patterns characterizing the construction of individual and collective identities in virtual communities (in our case: the Twitter community). We have explored several theoretical approaches and frameworks and relevant empirical data to show that the agents building virtual communities are 'extended selves' grounded in a highly dynamic and compressed, linguistically mediated virtual network structure. Our empirical evidence consists of a study of discourse related to the Latvian parliamentary elections of 2010. We used a Twitter corpus (in Latvian) harvested and statistically evaluated using the Pointwise Mutual Informati…
Adoption of Constrained Application Protocol
2016
Among billions of Internet enabled devices that are expected to surround us in the near future, many will be resource constrained, i.e., will have limited power supply, processing power and memory. To cope with these limitations, the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) has been recently introduced as a lightweight alternative to HTTP for connecting the resource limited devices to the Web. Although the new protocol offers solid technical advantages, it remains uncertain whether a successful uptake will follow, as it depends also on its economic feasibility for the involved stakeholders. Therefore, this paper studies the techno-economic feasibility of CoAP using a systematic methodologica…
Evaluation Framework of Hypertext Access for Program Comprehension Support
2008
Hypertext consists of text fragments connected by links enabling fast nonlinear browsing of the fragments. In case of program text there are many alternative ways to form the fragmentation and linkage. Transient hypertext is a general and well-grounded approach for offering capabilities to form versatile information access support for many kinds of central software maintenance activities. Transient hypertextual access structures (THASs) are data structures formed automatically based on situation dependent information needs of the users of program comprehension support tools. The approach has been implemented in HyperSoft system. It is aimed at supporting legacy software maintenance and comp…
Semantic Agent Programming Language (S-APL): A Middleware Platform for the Semantic Web
2008
The agent-based approach is an effective one for building middleware interconnecting distributed heterogeneous resources and providing semantic interoperability among them. On the other hand, agents need the semantic Web technologies for flexible yet effective coordination among them with a particular issue of enabling agents to communicate not only about the domain but also about their own abilities, goals, and present and intended actions. This paper describes semantic agent programming language (SAPL)intended to be a core middleware language for the semantic Web. S-APL integrates the semantic description of the domain resources with the semantic prescription of the agents' behaviors. Add…
