An information system is a multilevel system characterized by a “data” level, a “behavioral” level, and a “communication” level. The data level represents the data stored by the system. The behavioral level represents management and production processes carried out by the system. The processes can interact with the data level to extract, generate, and store data. The communication level relates to the network used to exchange data and activate processes between geographically distant users or machines.

Managing IFC for civil engineering projects

The "Industrial Foundation Classes" (IFC) are an ISO norm to define all components of a building in a civil engineering project. IFC files are textual files whose size can reach 100 megabytes. Several IFC files can coexist on the same civil engineering project. Due to their size, their handling and sharing is a complex task. In this paper, we present an approach to automatically identify business objects in the IFC files and simplify their visualization and manipulation on the Internet. The goal is to increase knowledge about different research methods that have been employed in the information technology field by supporting the information exchange, collaboration, and cooperation between researchers. Well-designed, well-told stories can help others learn from past situations to respond more effectively in future situation. A blog is presented where PhD students and researchers are invited to collaborate by providing their stories, reading and commenting existing stories. This infrastructure allows researchers and PhD students to write the contents posing questions and finding answers on the relationship between research process and research results.

A complex Web service described with languages like BPEL4WS, consists of an executable process and its observable behaviour (called an abstract process) based on the messages exchanged with the client. The abstract process behaviour is non deterministic due to the internal choices during the service execution. Domain-Specific OWL Ontology Visualization with OWLGrEd

The OWLGrEd ontology editor allows graphical visualization and authoring of OWL 2.0 ontologies using a compact yet intuitive presentation that combines UML class diagram notation with textual Manchester syntax for expressions. We present an extension mechanism for OWLGrEd that allows adding custom information areas, rules and visual effects to the ontology presentation thus enabling domain specific OWL ontology visualizations. The usage of OWLGrEd and its extensions is demonstrated on ontology engineering examples involving custom annotation visualizations, advanced UML class dia-gram constructs and integrity constraints in semantic database schema design.

Sixth graders’ evaluation strategies when reading Internet search results : an eye-tracking study

Eye-tracking technology was used to examine Internet search result evaluation strategies adopted by sixth-grade students (N = 36) during ten experimental information search tasks. The relevancy of the search result’s title, URL, and snippet components was manipulated and selection of search results as well as looking into probabilities on the search result components was analysed. The results revealed that during first-pass inspection, students read the search engine page by first looking at the title of a search result.
