Design of antitumor drugs targeting c-kit receptor by a new mixed ligand-structure based method
2020
An important challenge, in the medicinal chemistry field, is the research of novel forceful drugs to overcome tumor-acquired resistance. The c-Kit tyrosine kinase receptor (TKR) represents a suitable target for the carcinogenesis control of gastro-intestinal stromal (GIST), leukemia, and mastocytosis tumors; nevertheless, several hotspot mutations of the protein limit the efficacy of a few clinical administered TKRs inhibitors. In this study, a new in silico protocol based on ligand and structure-based combined method is proposed, with the aim to identify a set of new c-Kit inhibitors able to complex c-Kit mutated proteins. A recent and freely available web-server DRUDIT is used for the lig…
Reply to LoganDodge: 'stable isotopes challenge the perception of ocean sunfish Mola mola as obligate jellyfish predators'.
2013
Syvaranta et al. (2012) recently provided stable-isotope data from eight small-bodied ocean sunfish Mola mola (L. 1758) captured from the Italian fishing port of Camogli on the Ligurian coast. Representative data were also given for members of pelagic and neritic–coastal food webs. The level of 13C and 15N enrichment shown by M. mola relative to their putative obligate diet of gelatinous zooplankton (gelata) (based on the locally dominant Pelagia noctiluca and literature data) was used to question their obligate consumption of such prey. Furthermore, the M. mola were isotopically more similar to neritic rather than pelagic fishes captured locally, prompting the suggestion that juvenile M. m…
Stable isotopes challenge the perception of ocean sunfish Mola mola as obligate jellyfish predators
2011
Evidence is provided from stable isotope analysis that aggregations of small ocean sunfish Mola mola (total length <1 m) feed broadly within coastal food webs and their classification as obligate predators of gelatinous zooplankton requires revision.

Safeguarding the Ultra-dense Networks with the aid of Physical Layer Security: A review and a case study
2016
In the wake of the extensive application of the fourth generation system, investigations of new technologies have been moving ahead vigorously to embrace the next generation communications in 2020. Thereinto, the technique of ultra-dense networks (UDNs) serves as a key enabler in meeting the roaring mobile traffic demands. With the prevalence of mobile Internet services especially those involve the mobile payment, security has gained an unprecedented amount of attention and become a highlighted feature for the fifth generation. Resource allocation, one of the most significant tools on getting over the obstacle of ubiquitous interference as well as elevating the spectrum/energy efficiency, h…
Children's engagement during digital game-based learning of reading: The effects of time, rewards, and challenge
2014
This study investigated the effects of two game features (the level of challenge and the reward system) on first and second graders' engagement during digital game-based learning of reading. We were particularly interested in determining how well these features managed to maintain children's engagement over the 8-week training period. The children (N = 138) used GraphoGame, a web-based game training letter-sound connections, at home under the supervision of parents. Data regarding the children's gaming and engagement were stored on the GraphoGame online server. A 2 x 2 factorial design was used to investigate the effects of the level of challenge (high challenge vs. high success) and the pr…
Characterization of the Apical Membrane Antigen-1 in Italian Strains of Babesia bigemina
2010
Summary Babesia bigemina is a parasite endemic in different parts of the world, including Europe and the Americas. One of the few genes characterized in this species codifies for the Apical Membrane Antigen 1 (AMA-1), a trans-membrane antigen recently identified. In this research, we characterized the ama-1 gene from three Italian B. bigemina strains, two B. bigemina strains obtained from Ragusa, Sicily (ITA1 and ITA3) and a third one obtained from Benevento, Campania (ITA2). Italian sequences were compared with those of the Australian strain obtained from the Sanger Institute web site and to strains from different parts of the world. The results obtained confirmed that this newly described…
MGFM: a novel tool for detection of tissue and cell specific marker genes from microarray gene expression data
2015
Background Identification of marker genes associated with a specific tissue/cell type is a fundamental challenge in genetic and cell research. Marker genes are of great importance for determining cell identity, and for understanding tissue specific gene function and the molecular mechanisms underlying complex diseases. Results We have developed a new bioinformatics tool called MGFM (Marker Gene Finder in Microarray data) to predict marker genes from microarray gene expression data. Marker genes are identified through the grouping of samples of the same type with similar marker gene expression levels. We verified our approach using two microarray data sets from the NCBI’s Gene Expression Omn…
Construction of a webgis tool based on a gis semiautomated processing for the localization of p2g plants in sicily (Italy)
2021
The recent diffusion of RES (Renewable Energy Sources), considering the electric energy produced by photovoltaic and wind plants, brought to light the problem of the unpredictable nature of wind and solar energy. P2G (Power to Gas) implementation seems to be the right solution, transforming curtailed energy in hydrogen. The choice of the settlement of P2G plants is linked to many factors like the distances between the gas grid and the settlement of RES plants, the transportation networks, the energy production, and population distribution. In light of this, the implementation of a Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) into a Geographic Information System (GIS) processing represents a good strategy …
