How to keep your staff healthy in the educational sector?

2021

The purpose of the paper is to identify risks and challenges for alternative forms of work during online classes for teaching personnel. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) affect the body’s bones, muscles, joints, ligaments/tendons, and nerves. Musculoskeletal health risk in the educational sector should be taken into consideration to ensure the safety and healthy employees, especially when online classes require a physical inactivity and a prolonged sitting in front of the computer. MSD management requires an integrated approach integrating wellbeing with a focus on prevention, recognizing physical, social and emotional influences and early intervention. Workplace wellness has been a valuable…

Can Sport and Wellness Technology be My Personal Trainer? : Teenagers and Digital Coaching

2018

The attention towards digital coaching solutions has increased among users of sport and wellness technologies, the related industry, the healthcare and wellness sector, and among scholars. However, as the commercial digital coaching solutions are rather novel, the number of studies about their influence or the usage experiences is still rather limited. Another topic that is lacking research is the relationship of teenagers and sport and wellness technology. Since using the internet and technological devices on a daily basis has become the norm for teenagers, it is worth paying attention to how technology could be developed in order to better motivate them towards a healthier lifestyle. The …

Cuerpos moldeables y vidas modulables: La invención del estado holísticamente saludable como bienestar (integral)

2020

The article argues ?from the Deleuzian concepts of society of control, moulding and modulation and the Rosean theory on the economization and medicalization of life? that the expansion of the concept of health in terms of integral and subjective well-being is the effect of a socio-historical shift in the way we relate to this signifier, and therefore to our bodies and ourselves. We use this interpretative network to analyze the effects that the biopsychosocial health paradigm has had in the context of aesthetic surgery and fitness practice. As a result, we see that the expansion of the concept of health has extended the domain of medicine into the spheres of personal care and physical appea…

The Conceptions of Quality of Life, Wellness and Well-Being: A Literature Review

2022

In the last few years, a growing body of research has been interested in wellness, quality of life, and well-being issues. Furthermore, institutions, governments, and policymakers start to introduce numerous physical and mental well-being programs, whereas scholars interested in well-being research use different indicators to evaluate them. Although these terms are popular in the scientific debate, they are variously interpreted and at the conceptual level do not have a standard definition. This disagreement is particularly relevant when considering the questions related to their measurement and application in empirical research. This review explores the main theoretical conceptions of qual…

Some Sociological remarks on the Fitness Industry and the Fitness Culture

2023

During the last few years, the fitness culture is becoming gradually more globalized, and such a trend involves sport, physical activity, and wellness areas. The globalization of fitness culture also reflects the prosperity of the fitness industry, today a global business of multibillion dollars. This article discusses the reasons that have led to the transformation of fitness culture in a global movement. The relationship between the processes of globalization and the fitness culture is addressed under the sociological perspective. The metaphor of “McDonaldization” of society partly explains the homogenization and standardization of cultural ideals, bodies representation, and conceptions o…

A concept for personal wellness management based on activity monitoring

2008

Lifestyle related health problems are increasing rapidly. Many of them could be prevented or alleviated by sufficient physical activity, enough sleep, and a balanced diet. Individual citizens have the main responsibility for their own health and wellness management in their daily lives. Motivational tools based on modern technologies can support people in this task. Vivago Personal Wellness Manager (PWM) is a concept for personal wellness management, based on continuous activity monitoring with a wrist-worn device combined with immediate feedback on daily activity, e.g., sleep and physical activity. The concept allows long-term monitoring of activity patterns and includes PC software for de…

Can Digital Coaching Boost Your Performance? – A Qualitative Study among Physically Active People

2019

The use of sport and wellness technology devices among athletes is highly popular. At the same time the demand for easy to understand, clear, and personalized information is also growing. Instead of numbers, users need and want solutions. Digital coaching can offer solutions for this by providing valuable training data and offering guidance and instructions on how to improve the training. This exploratory study focuses on the experiences, needs, and wants regarding a digital coach application among physically active people, more precisely crosscountry skiers. We found that the digital coach was perceived to have motivational elements. It was also viewed having potential to increase the awar…

Wellness-kuluttaminen Suomessa : hyvinvointiin ja ulkonäköön panostaminen suomalaisten kulutusasenteissa

2013

Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan wellness-kuluttamista Suomessa. Tutkimusm…
