Shifting notions of gendered care and neoliberal motherhood: From the lives of Latvian migrant women in Guernsey
2014
Synopsis In this article I analyse how socioeconomic constraints structure the geographical mobility of Latvian migrant women working on the island of Guernsey. A shifting notion of gendered care is revealed through a time-geographic investigation of distant emplacements of workplace and home, and through the neoliberal-informed evaluations by the mothers themselves. Their justifications emphasise the belief that care from a distance should be prioritised over physical proximity to those in need of care. With examples from interviews with mothers who have provided care during their movements between Latvia and Guernsey, I demonstrate how the outcomes of shifting notions of gendered care are…
Fuel Load and Potential Flight Ranges of Passerine Birds Migrating through the Western Edge of the Pyrenees
2011
Abstract. The estimation of fuel load and the potential flight ranges of migrant birds are crucial to understanding the ecological and evolutionary significance of bird migration strategies. The movement of migrant birds between Iberia and the rest of Western Europe is thought to be shaped by the Pyrenees and nearby seas. Because of this area's unique geography, the routes of migrants that move to (autumn migration) or from (spring migration) Iberia tend to pass through the western and eastern edges of the Pyrenees. Fuel-load analyses and the assessment of potential flight ranges from these edges can provide insights about the extent of Iberia's use as a consistent stopover and fuelling are…
Analysing the presence of school-shooting related communities at social media sites
2010
Surprisingly cruel mass murders and attacks have been witnessed in the educational institutions of the Western world since the 1970s. These are often referred to as 'school shootings'. There have been over 300 known incidents around the world and the number is growing. Social network sites (SNSs) have enabled the perpetrators to express their views and intentions. Our result is that since about 2005, all major school shooters have had a presence in SNS and some have left traces that would have made possible to evaluate their intentions to carry out a rampage. A further hypothesis is that future school shooters will behave in a similar manner and would thus be traceable in the digital sphere…
Leptechioceras (Neomicroceras) Donovan, 1966 (Ammonitina, Echioceratidae, Sinémurien, Europe du Nord-Ouest): Taxon progénétique ou microconque?
1992
Winter “weekend effect” in southern Europe and its connections with periodicities in atmospheric dynamics
2008
[1] Winter weekly cycles of different climatic variables have been detected over Spain during the 1961–2004 period. The 13 analyzed series come from stations placed on different climatological and geographical areas with different level of urban influence. Therefore, the weekly cycles can hardly be related with local effects. Contrarily, we suggest that the weekly cycles may be related with changes in the atmospheric circulation over Western Europe, which may be due to some indirect effect of anthropogenic aerosols. Particularly interesting is the observed increase in Sea Level Pressure over Southern Europe during the weekends and consequently a decrease of anticyclonic conditions during th…
Forty Years of the Philosophy of Education in the Nordic Countries
1997
Abstract The authors of this section's article are of the opinion that the ‘pure’ philosophers in Scandinavia do not usually consider philosophy of education to be a philosophical discipline in line with other ‘hyphenated’ philosophies. They argue that the way that philosophy of education is viewed in the Nordic countries is more like how it is treated in English‐speaking countries, which is different from the German tradition where Bildung is historically both an educational and a philosophical concept. But Nordic contributors to philosophy of education, inspired by the main philosophical trends of the time, have perceived themselves in the last few decades as partakers in the general phil…
The global cardiovascular risk transition: associations of four metabolic risk factors with national income, urbanization, and Western diet in 1980 a…
2013
Background— It is commonly assumed that cardiovascular disease risk factors are associated with affluence and Westernization. We investigated the associations of body mass index (BMI), fasting plasma glucose, systolic blood pressure, and serum total cholesterol with national income, Western diet, and, for BMI, urbanization in 1980 and 2008. Methods and Results— Country-level risk factor estimates for 199 countries between 1980 and 2008 were from a previous systematic analysis of population-based data. We analyzed the associations between risk factors and per capita national income, a measure of Western diet, and, for BMI, the percentage of the population living in urban areas. In 1980, the…
Zebrafish Reveals Different and Conserved Features of Vertebrate Neuroglobin Gene Structure, Expression Pattern, and Ligand Binding
2004
Neuroglobin has been identified as a respiratory protein that is primarily expressed in the mammalian nervous system. Here we present the first detailed analysis of neuroglobin from a non-mammalian vertebrate, the zebrafish Danio rerio. The zebrafish neuroglobin gene reveals a mammalian-type exon-intron pattern in the coding region (B12.2, E11.0, and G7.0), plus an additional 5'-non-coding exon. Similar to the mammalian neuroglobin, the zebrafish protein displays a hexacoordinate deoxy-binding scheme. Flash photolysis kinetics show the competitive binding on the millisecond timescale of external ligands and the distal histidine, resulting in an oxygen affinity of 1 torr. Western blotting, i…
Glen Philips: Western Australia's poet of the land and environment
2020
„In the Hollow of the Land”, widząc w nim egzemplifikację wspólnego rozumienia świata, jaki jest …
